Exciting New Features with VMware Log Intelligence

VMworld US 2018 Recap

It’s hard to believe that more than a month has passed since VMworld US. If you missed our exciting announcement during the event regarding Log Intelligence, you can read our in-depth blog here.

What’s New with VMware Log Intelligence

The VMware team has developed some exciting new features, which are available via the Log Intelligence product today. Highlights include:

  1. The ability to create private dashboards for faster troubleshooting.
The addition of private dashboards will accelerate troubleshooting through deeper analysis of certain patterns or anomalies in logs, with more visibility across each user’s prioritized dashboards.
  2. A new user interface to easily access out-of-the-box content packs in a single pane of glass.
The new user interface for content pack management will provide a single pane of glass to accelerate troubleshooting with out-of-the-box queries, alerts and dashboards.
  3. Access to usage reports, enabling more accurate monitoring of daily log consumption across multiple sources.
Usage reports will allow users to more accurately predict their log consumption through historical data.

Private Dashboards

When users select dashboards in the menu screen, there will now be separate tabs for shared dashboards and private dashboards.

The shared dashboard is an existing feature, but the private dashboards feature was added to help customers maintain dashboards that are most relevant to their troubleshooting use cases.

Content Pack Updates

The content pack menu item was added to the left hand bar for easy access to out-of-the-box content packs. Having central access to the content packs will help customers accelerate their troubleshooting experience with pre-made alerts, queries and dashboards.

Disabling a Content Pack

As the number of content packs increase, it may be difficult to navigate the content most relevant to specific customer use cases. Users now have the option to disable a content pack with a single click, and only enable the one they need.

Usage Reports

Most customers will have multiple log streams linked to their log analytics tool of choice. Given most of these tools are consumption-based, it’s difficult to predict how much to allocate each month to maintain the ingestion of those logs. With the usage report, users can now view log consumption broken down daily. This may also drive a change in behavior to filter only the most relevant logs required for routine troubleshooting across infrastructure and applications.

The Future of Troubleshooting

Log Intelligence is designed for seamless and, well, trouble-free troubleshooting. The combination of private dashboards and the centralized content pack will accelerate troubleshooting across infrastructure and applications through a single pane of glass. The usage reports will more accurately predict daily log consumption based on historical data.
