Announcing the General Availability of Holodeck 9.0.2

We’re excited to announce the General Availability of Holodeck 9.0.2, the latest maintenance release that builds on the robust foundation established by Holodeck 9.0 and 9.0.1. This new release delivers enhanced capabilities, improved reliability, and expanded Day 2 operations for your nested VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments.

A heartfelt thank you to our growing community for your continued engagement, feedback, and adoption of Holodeck. Your insights drive continuous improvement and help us deliver a tool that truly meets your testing and training needs.

Holodeck continues to revolutionize how teams deploy, test, and understand VCF by providing a self-contained, automated, and repeatable solution that eliminates the complexity and resource overhead typically associated with nested environments. This maintenance release introduces significant enhancements that make Holodeck even more powerful and reliable.

What’s New in Holodeck 9.0.2.0

Expanded VCF Support and Deployment Capabilities

  • VCF 9.0.2.0 Support: Deploy the latest VCF 9.0.2.0 environments alongside continued support for VCF 9.0.0.0, 9.0.1.0, 5.2, 5.2.1, and 5.2.2.
  • Supervisor Deployment in Management Domain: Holodeck now supports deploying Supervisor in the management domain via the new -DeploySupervisorMgmtDomain parameter, expanding your VMware Kubernetes capabilities.
  • VCF Automation All Apps Org Creation: Add VCF Automation All Apps Org as a Day 2 operation, enhancing your automation workflows after initial deployment.

Enhanced Day 2 Operations

The new Update-HoloDeckInstance cmdlet transforms how you manage Day 2 operations:

  • Replaces the previous -Interactive mode with a dedicated cmdlet for post-deployment operations.
  • Supports deploying additional clusters in VCF instances.
  • Enables All Apps Org deployment in VCF Automation.
  • Uses -Site, -VIDomain, and operation-specific flags for precise control.

Improved Reliability and Troubleshooting

  • Dedicated Error Logging: Errors are now captured in a separate log file under /holodeck-runtime/logs/, including detailed diagnostics with stack traces, exception types, and full error records for easier troubleshooting.
  • Enhanced HoloRouter: Split DNSMASQ into dedicated DNS and DHCP pods with improved service definitions for better reliability and scalability.
  • Automated Certificate Trust: Automated HTTPS certificate trust establishment between VCF Installer and offline depot, streamlining secure depot workflows.
  • Smart Retry Logic: Automated bundle download retry on failure, ensuring smoother deployments.

Cmdlet Enhancements

  • New-HoloDeckInstance: InstanceID is now mandatory, ensuring clearer instance management. The -DeploySupervisor parameter has been renamed to -DeploySupervisorWldDomain for clarity.
  • Get-HoloDeckInstance: Retrieve detailed information about nested components deployed via New-HoloDeckInstance.
  • Start-HoloDeckInstance / Stop-HoloDeckInstance: Updated to handle complex deployment types with proper power-off sequencing.
  • Get-HolodeckServiceIPPools: New cmdlet displaying IP pool allocations used by all Holodeck services for easier network troubleshooting.

Quality and Stability Improvements

This release addresses numerous issues identified by the community, including:

  • Applied NSX Image validation workaround for VCF 9.0.0.0 and 9.0.1.0 deployments
  • Fixed offline depot authentication and proxy protocol handling
  • Resolved state management issues for Day 2 operations
  • Enhanced DNSMASQ configuration and service definitions
  • Improved pre-check validations and user input handling

Why Holodeck Matters

In today’s rapidly evolving technology landscape, the ability to quickly test and validate new capabilities is critical. Holodeck addresses the traditional challenges of deploying nested VCF environments:

  • Dramatically Reduced Hardware Requirements: Run complete VCF environments on a single ESX host or vSphere cluster with sufficient capacity.
  • Self-Contained Infrastructure: Built-in NTP, DNS, BGP, and DHCP services eliminate dependency on external data center infrastructure.
  • Isolated Networking: With NSX on your infrastructure or a single physical host you can deploy multiple, conflict-free nested environments without complex VLAN and BGP configurations.
  • Automation and Repeatability: Near hands-off deployment that’s consistent and easily reproducible.

Whether you’re building expertise in VCF operations, testing new features, or conducting training sessions, Holodeck provides the flexible, reliable platform you need.
