Virtually Speaking: The AI Reality Check with Dave Linthicum

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere right now. Every conference keynote, analyst report, and vendor announcement seems to promise massive transformation driven by AI.

But how much of that promise is actually translating into real enterprise outcomes?

In this episode of the Virtually Speaking Podcast, we sit down with cloud and AI industry analyst Dave Linthicum to talk about what’s really happening inside enterprise AI initiatives today. Dave shares his perspective from working with CIOs, technology leaders, and organizations trying to turn AI from hype into something that actually delivers value.

One of the biggest themes from the conversation is the growing gap between AI hype and enterprise reality.

While the industry conversation often suggests AI adoption is happening at lightning speed, many organizations are still in the early stages of experimentation. Pilots are being launched, proofs of concept are being tested, and teams are trying to understand where AI can truly make an impact.

But moving from experimentation to production is proving more difficult than many expected.

Dave points out that several challenges consistently slow down enterprise AI initiatives.

First, data readiness is often overlooked. AI systems depend heavily on high-quality, well-governed data, and many organizations discover their data environments are not yet prepared to support large-scale AI workloads.

Second, organizations frequently underestimate the infrastructure and operational complexity required to support AI. Running AI workloads at scale requires careful planning around compute, storage, networking, and cost management.

And finally, there’s the question of business value. Many organizations launch AI projects because the technology is exciting, not because a specific business problem needs to be solved. Without clear use cases, even technically successful AI projects can fail to deliver meaningful outcomes.

Dave also discusses the importance of governance, security, and long-term strategy when introducing AI into enterprise environments. As organizations begin experimenting with generative AI tools and models, the need for proper oversight and data protection becomes increasingly critical.

Despite the challenges, Dave remains optimistic about the long-term potential of AI. The key, he explains, is approaching AI adoption in a thoughtful and disciplined way, focusing on real business problems, building strong data foundations, and investing in the infrastructure needed to support these workloads.

In other words, success with AI will come not from chasing hype, but from building the right foundations.

If you’re trying to understand where enterprise AI adoption really stands today, and what organizations should be doing now to prepare for the future, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
