The Complete U is a video series telling the stories of the people at VMware – what drives them, what they do at work and outside of work and what makes them stay @VMware.
Meet Yordan – open source developer at VMware, experimental physicist and passionate kayaker. Yordan has more than 12 years of experience as an experimental physicist and also has a Ph.D. in particle physics. Before joining VMware Yordan has worked in some of the world’s largest physics laboratories, like CERN, FermiLab and RAL, developing software for particle physics experiments. Yordan joined the VMware Open source team in 2017 to work on instruments for visualization and analysis of Linux kernel tracing data. See his story.
Tell us more about your love for experimental physics?
Yes, it is love indeed. I guess it all started with my curiosity to understand how things work. Studying physics was the ultimate way to find the answers of my questions. Before joining the open source team at VMware, I had more than 12 years of experience as an experimental physicist, including a Ph.D. in particle physics. During this period I worked in some of the world’s largest physics laboratories, like CERN, FermiLab and RAL, developing software for particle physics experiments.
When you decided to change your line of work, how did VMware attract you?
It was a combination of the company’s reputation as an innovation leader and the impeccable personal reputation of the members of the open source team. I was going to change the field and I wanted to learn from the best, while working on interesting and challenging problems. VMware gave me this opportunity.
Tell us more about the work you do at the Open Source team at VMware?
My team works on infrastructure for system tracing. This includes tracing the Linux kernel but also ESXi. We also develop instruments for analysis of the collected tracing data. Part of our job is to present at the major open source events and conferences and to popularize in the community the contributions made by the company. In fact the majority of our users are outside of VMware.
