Taking control of IoT from inception to production and beyond

The exciting potential of the Internet of Things is predominantly about getting value from new sources of data through analytics. But for many of our customers, there are stumbling blocks in getting to a stage where IoT can yield a return-on-investment.

That’s why at VMware, we’ve decided to take away many of the obstacles that enterprises shouldn’t have to worry about so that they can focus on extracting meaningful insights from IoT data and acting on it. Managing IoT is complicated, and it requires a specialist infrastructure that is purpose-built to ensure IT and operational technology teams have complete control over it, and the ‘things’ incorporated within it. This is why we’ve launched our Pulse IoT Center.

For customers who are struggling to go from Proof-of-Concept (POC) to production, it’s an easy-to-use platform which is designed specifically for production use cases. It will give them a simpler way of tracking, visualising, monitoring and securing hundreds, or even thousands of IoT devices.

Even for those companies that have managed to get to the production stage, there is a need for more management and control because IoT deployments are on the rise. We don’t see that slowing down anytime soon either – IDC predicted the worldwide install base of IoT endpoints to grow from 12.1 billion at the end of 2015 to more than 30 billion in 2020*. The Pulse IoT Center will help accelerate ROI by streamlining how IoT projects get deployed and scaled.

Whether the company is still at the early stages of IoT or advanced, there needs to be a focus on security. While IoT analytics could help an organisation to thrive, a cyber-attack or data breach as a result of insecure IoT infrastructure could have the opposite effect.

Organisations need a secure IoT infrastructure which ensures a level of security on devices, network and applications. The ability to minimise data exposed, wipe data from devices at anytime, and maintain and update firmware and security patches are critical. As is the monitoring of devices in real-time and the ability to act on anomalies before they arise.

Having an IoT management infrastructure in place means that an organisation can innovate faster, simplify deployment of IoT projects, and ultimately boost their revenues. The Pulse IoT Center is the first solution in a new family of VMware IoT offerings, and it aims to make IoT a reality for businesses without any of the common complications – bringing together an all-encompassing solution that deals with all of the IoT management criteria.
