VMware Cloud-Native Apps @ VMworld 2016

VMware is delivering enterprise container infrastructure to enable customers to deliver all the production grade capabilities they expect for applications running in production to container workloads, namely monitoring, security, compliance, availability, back up, and more.  VMware offers two enterprise container infrastructure solutions.

vSphere Integrated Containers enables deep integration of Docker containers with vSphere.  It provides the best of both worlds – developers see a Docker interface and can thus leverage their existing Docker-compatible tools and processes, while operators see vSphere VMs and can apply and leverage all the investments they’ve made in their vSphere ecosystem, tooling, and processes.  This enables all the enterprise operational capabilities of vSphere environments to be extended to container-based workloads.

Photon Platform is a web-scale enterprise container infrastructure for pure container environments.  It’s designed for fully API-driven / automated, high scale, secure / multi-tenant, DevOps environments.  It’s tightly integrated with popular cloud native application platforms, like Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, Mesos, and Docker, enabling application teams to leverage the technology of their choice.  It also has built-in networking, storage, and monitoring via integrations with NSX, VSAN, and Log Insight.

Don’t miss the following VMware Cloud-Native Apps highlights at VMworld 2016:

  • Kit Colbert at General Session (View Keynote – Tues, 9-10:30am)
  • Paul Fazzone’s spotlight session – Cloud-Native Apps (CNA9993-S – Tues, 11:30-12:30pm)
  • Ryan Kelly’s session – Containers 101 (CNA7522 – Tues, 4-5pm)
  • Karthik Narayan’s session – (VIC) vSphere Integrated Containers (CNA8717 – Tues, 4-5pm)
  • Paul Gifford’s session – Zero to VMware Photon Platform (CNA7741 – Thurs, 10:30-11:30am)

Previewing the VMvillage at VMworld 2016

As you know, there’s more to VMworld than just sessions – all work and no play make a dull VMworld attendee, right?

In between your breakout sessions, keynotes, quick talks, hands-on labs – whatever it may be – we invite all VMworld attendees to visit the VMvillage!

What’s the VMvillage, you ask?

The VMvillage is one of the prime destinations at this year’s VMworld. Think of it as a hub for you to explore, relax, and recharge. As the space is designated for all VMworld attendees, you’ll also be able to network and discover VMware programs as well!

Let’s take a tour:

In the heart of the VMvillage, you’ll find the Hang Space – one of the more popular attractions at VMworld. The Hang Space is an oasis of calm in the midst of all the action that’s happening at VMworld. On hand will be plenty of fun distractions, including arcade games, refreshments, plenty of charging areas to charge up your devices and of course, Wi-Fi to catch up on email!

Sometimes, you need to take a break from reality. Within the VMvillage, you’ll find a special exhibit – Virtual Reality by NVIDIA. In this special VMvillage feature, you’ll be able to step into another dimension of reality with two unique and cutting-edge VR experiences. Want to explore the future of virtual workspaces? VMware and NVIDIA are teaming up to bring you virtual reality running in a virtual environment. In this demo, you can see how your work will look when you no longer have to rely on 2D or 3D images, but can actually experience it around you in virtual reality.

Keep wandering around the VMvillage and you’ll stumble upon the IoT Pavilion presented by Deloitte. This interactive experience features an augmented reality exhibit, highlighting real-world stories of how VMware cloud management services help to enable the Internet of Things.

The VMvillage also features special-interest lounge spaces! Maybe you want to learn more about VCP or VCAP certification at the Education and Certification Lounge. TAM Customer? The TAM Customer Lounge is right outside the Hang Space. And of course, no VMworld is complete without VMUG – the VMUG Lounge will be at the VMvillage, where you’ll be able to learn about the latest programs, connect with VMUG members and pick up the annual VMUG t-shirt!

Need to meet with colleagues? At the VMvillage, you can use the Meeting Center, which offers drop-in, flexible meeting space for attendees to connect with VMware subject matter experts, as well as other attendees. Make same-day reservations for non-consecutive, one-hour blocks.

VMware would be nowhere without it’s great customer base. At the Customer Advocacy space, you’ll learn more about what VMware is doing with the customer and partner feedback we receive. VMware employees will be on-hand to meet you and hear about your VMware experience. The VMware Customer Advocacy organization’s mission is for every employee to be a customer advocate, empowered to create experiences and solutions customers love. To support this, the Customer Advocacy space is here for you – to share your voice, your feedback, so we can guide our company actions based on your input.

Also inside of the VMvillage, you’ll find VMware {code}, a platform for enterprise developers to collaborate on solutions to accelerate application development. VMware {code} wants to connect enterprise developers to VMware fortune 1000 customers, taking advantage of the latest microservices, cloud native apps, and agile development methodology. Visit VMware {code} at the VMvillage to learn more about the {code} Store, Newsletter, and other various programs they have to offer.

In addition to all of these cool spots, the VMvillage acts as headquarters for a wide range of social and community activities. In addition to staying on top of the activity on the VMworld Socialstream, you’ll be able to take in Community Tech Talk Theater (by none other than #vBrownBag), visit the VMTN Communities or CloudCred Booth, and even get a behind-the-scenes look at theCUBE, which will be live-streaming throughout the event. Have a vlog or podcast you want to do from VMworld? We’re setting up designated self-service stations with all the amenities you need.

If you need to take a break, recharge your batteries, or just want to have some fun, be sure to stop by the VMvillage!

We’ll see you in Las Vegas!

VMworld 2016 Content Previews

One of the top reasons folks from around the world flock to VMworld every year is the content. On average, a VMworld attendee will attend 10 breakout sessions at the show – not to mention the hundreds of hands-on-labs, workshops, group discussions and 1:1 with VMware experts.

Whether it’s your first VMworld, or your 13th, there are over 400 unique sessions for you to attend (in addition to quick talks, group discussions, labs and more), presenting an endless combination of learning opportunities.

We know sessions tend to fill up quickly, and we certainly do our best to offer repeats of those hot sessions. As a best practice, start building your schedule if you’re registered for the conference!

Unsure what sessions to register for?

Below are content previews from 4 of the hottest topic areas at this year’s VMworld. Check out these previews and see if you’re able to draw some inspiration when creating your VMworld schedule!

Network Virtualization

Bruce Davie, the CTO of Networking at VMware, discusses the future of networking virtualization in a session from VMworld 2015. During NET8193R at VMworld 2016, he’ll be doing a technical deep dive, taking an “under the hood” look at network virtualization, examining the underlying architecture and its ongoing evolution.

Being the virtualization event of the year, VMworld is here to help!

The 2016 conference will offer a plethora of sessions on how you can utilize desktop virtualization, endpoint management, security, and other technologies to reduce the complexity and cost of managing the connected enterprise. Take a look at our featured virtualization sessions here.

Networking as we know it, is undergoing a huge transition. It’s fundamentally transforming from a hardware-driven industry, into a software industry. In this content preview of one of the best rated and attended VMworld 2015 sessions, “The Next Horizon for Cloud Networking and Security”, you’ll discover what happens when you add: Containers + Public Cloud + NSX. At VMworld 2016, you will be able to learn everything from NSX use cases to automating networking & security operations with NSX.

At VMworld 2016, our technology experts will help you build the skills necessary to deliver the benefits of NSX. We know architecting, implementing and managing enterprise networks is a more complex task than ever, so take a look at our featured NSX sessions in 2016, here.

Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI)

Hyper-converged infrastructure, or HCI, is emerging as an enterprise storage architecture for the datacenter. This VMworld 2015 session, STO5954-S, discusses what HCI is, what makes it possible, as well as how customers can leverage HCI to solve real problems. The session takes a closer look at VMware’s solution for HCI – VMware Virtual SAN, diving into its unique characteristics and offers a customer perspective as well.

VMware Virtual SAN

In STO7650, a VMworld 2015 session (and a VMworld 2016 session!) featuring Duncan Epping and Lee Dilworth, you’ll hear a primer on the path of software-defined storage at VMware. Duncan and Lee overview the different software-defined storage initiatives from VMware, as well as how these fit into the SDDC picture. This session covers Virtual SAN (VSAN), Virtual Volumes (VVols) as well as the vSphere APIs for IO Filtering (VAIO).

Storage itself, is a business-critical job. Creating highly available and reliable solutions that store and protect data and applications while ensuring business continuity isn’t always black and white.

At this year’s VMworld, you’ll be able to discover how you can take hyper-converged infrastructure to the mainstream, while maximizing the benefits of your HCI. Additionally, VMworld will feature sessions displaying how to conduct a successful Virtual SAN Proof of Concept (POC), and also show you the roadmap of where VMware is headed with HCI and Virtual SAN.

Take a look at our featured storage/HCI sessions here.

The journey to knowledge at VMworld is up to you. Dive into VSAN. Get more knowledge around network virtualization. See what the hype is around hyper-converged infrastructure. Discover how businesses are using vCloud Air and the virtual private cloud.

Which path will you take? VMworld is coming August 28th.
