We are very fortunate to post an interview with Shay Banon, the founder of elasticsearch. Elasticsearch is technology that is very popular among some of the coolest companies on the web today, including  SoundCloud, StumbleUpon, Mozilla and Klout. These companies use elasticsearch to help them deploy powerful search capabilities in their applications that are easy to set up, scalable and built for the cloud.  In this interview, we get to learn all kinds of cool things:

Q1. So, how did you end up getting into search?

Understanding App Delivery Controllers in Hybrid Clouds

Many call Application Delivery Controllers (ADC) the next generation of load balancers.  Same as load balancers, they sit in front of web servers. In addition to providing the balancing services, they now help improve scale, availability, fault tolerance, security, and routing. But, not all ADCs are delivered as pure software solutions, designed for cloud-based and virtualized deployments, or work in hybrid cloud environments—items which are becoming mainstream requirements for the Software Defined Datacenter (SDDC) that VMware sees as the future of cloud computing.

Industry leaders across the board are gravitating to hybrid clouds for lower costs, no lock-in, greater flexibility, increased speed, built-in disaster recovery, and new capabilities. Of course, there are more reasons, and all these reasons are driving the need to get to a hybrid cloud model. In Sandhill.com’s recent “Leaders in the Cloud” research study from 2010 (and updated in 2011), they said, “our study surveyed more than 500 IT executives and indicated that the biggest growth will be in hybrid clouds (from 13 percent now to 43 percent in three years).”

In order to achieve the promises of hybrid clouds, VMware sees the need for a completely software driven data center so your applications are portable across disparate architectures.  By removing hardware devices, and creating application architectures where all infrastructure is virtualized, delivered as a service, and entirely automated by software, companies can now effectively move apps across clouds to meet their needs.

Could You Consolidate Databases 13 to 1?

Over the last 18 months I have had the good fortune to talk to a lot of Virtualization Infrastructure Administrators on the subject of VMware and databases.  One of the things I hear the most is:

“We are 50% virtualized and our goal is to get to 75% this year.  To do that, we have to get a handle on our databases.”

While I appreciate the goal, this is easier said than done.  You see, I used to be part of the problem.

Sneak Peak at VMware’s Nanotrader Reference Architecture

(Note: See a newer article on the renamed SpringTrader.) vFabric’s Reference Application, Nanotrader, provides customers with an end-to-end solution for developing, provisioning, and managing a distributed application in a cloud environment. The reference application and architecture provide customers and partners with a blueprint for development, infrastructure, and operations teams.

The Nanotrader application is based on the web based Trading application, Day Trader. The legacy Day Trader application provides context for application modernization by representing the “before” picture while Nanotrader provides developers with a blueprint for achieving the “after” picture. Functionally, both applications allow users to login, view their portfolio, lookup stock quotes, and buy or sell stock shares. However, this is where their similarity ends. Q&A w/VMware IT: Reducing Provisioning Time by 90% and Costs by 30%

One of the best performing posts we’ve had this year was titled “How VMware IT Reduced Provisioning Time by 80% Using vFabric Application Director and More.” The article below is more detailed information on the project in a Q&A session format with VMware’s Director of Technology Labs and Architecture, Thirumalesh Reddy.

1. So in your previous post, you covered the business case, before and after process, project functionality and scope as well as the results. You had said provisioning time was reduced by 80% and now it’s 90%. How do things keep getting better?
As we evolve and mature, we are able to automate more manual steps like load balancing VIP pool creations and post installation tasks. So, we’ve reduced provisioning time further because of this. If you think about it, most good infrastructure people already look for ways to automate redundant, manual tasks and prefer to run scripts where possible. Our technology let’s people do this on a massive scale, and we just keep finding more places to automate.

2. Besides the fact that you work for VMware and use your own products, why did the CIO or CTO really get behind this project?
Multiple times per year, we were manually provisioning or refreshing about 25 environments across our technology portfolio. We all know manual steps cause problems and are less efficient and effective. In our case, each environment provisioning or refresh cycle could take 3-8 weeks where 15-20 people touched it. Besides the extra operating expense of people’s time, a manual process with lots of hand-offs and touch points is ripe for errors and re-work. I don’t think anyone would disagree that this type of manual process is more prone to errors, incurs more delays, and includes less predictability. For our internal customers in the business and functional areas, the manual process also impacts SLAs. If you factor in compliance, risk management, and security, it’s an area ripe for improvement. Despite what people tell you, managing on-line applications on a cloud-scale is hard. One of the main challenges is related to the fact that as an application gets more and more popular, the underlining database often becomes the bottleneck.

When demand spikes, organizations are comfortable scaling their Web and App Server layers. However, as they increase the number of application instances to accommodate the growing demand, their data layer is unable to keep up.

We all know that a solution’s overall performance is only as good as it’s lowest common denominator. Increasingly, the lowest common denominator of today’s on-line applications is the database.

Recently, a large retail customer spoke to us about their experiences in dealing with demand spikes during holidays. Their virtualized infrastructure was more than capable of scaling horizontally to address the growing demand. However, their underlying, traditional database could not handle the large load increases. The database started to experience deadlocks, connection timeouts, and various other problems.
