Modern enterprises depend on an extensive fabric of databases and applications that have been built up over long periods of time. Relational databases based on Oracle are particularly a vital part of this infrastructure. It is critically important for businesses to ensure that such databases are protected against site and local failures. To enable continued efficient operation, businesses need to adapt to new platforms and database versions without disrupting business applications. Finally as IT systems grow and meet new requirements, there need to be mechanisms in place that feed vital Oracle data into data warehouses as well as new applications constructed on lower-cost platforms.
New VMware Continuent 5.0 enables organizations to easily and affordably migrate an older version of an Oracle database to a new database version on new on-premises hardware, to virtualized hosts, or to the cloud without downtime. Replicate from old versions of Oracle, often running on older, non-Linux platforms to newer versions of Oracle running on economical Linux platforms. Real-time replication to cloud-based or offsite data centers also helps to ensure that data is always available and assure business continuity in the event of a catastrophic site failure. It also means that organizations can take advantage of big data with real-time reporting and analytics, helping make better business decisions for enterprises and extract further value for Oracle investments.
With flexible filtering of databases, tables and columns across any combination of source and target environments, organizations can consolidate multiple Oracle databases into one, move databases to different Oracle editions, or replicate from Oracle to an open source MySQL for edge applications. Organizations can even use replication to help migrate applications to completely new database systems. Such strategies can lead to dramatically lower licensing costs while meeting or exceeding SLAs for users.
VMware Continuent 5.0 is now available from VMware and through the VMware vCloud Air Network (vCAN) partner network. With an ecosystem of over 4,000 service providers, in over 100 countries offering VMware-based cloud services, organizations will find a service provider that fits the services needed or specializes in a particular vertical market.
