Troubleshooting ThinApp Factory installs when using Workstation

If you are planning to install ThinApp Factory into VMware Workstation, you should know that there are some requirements you must meet prior to running the setup.   This post will describe those requirements, and also offer some suggestions if you have attempted the install and it has failed.

If you have ran the setup and you are seeing this error message:

Can't connect

and in the %TEMP%\appfactory.log you find this entry:

socket.error: [Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it
2012-06-21 11:20:02,078:INFO:deployer:Wizard complete, return: 0

Then you may not be meeting the requirements to install ThinApp Factory.   Here are the prerequisites for installing Factory to Workstation:

  • VMware Workstaiton 8.0 or later
  • The host system on which Workstation is installed must have at least two CPUs.
  • Shared VM's must be configured, using Port 443
  • The Workstation Server service must be started

To illustrate these requirements, here are some screenshots.   First, in Workstation Preferences, the Shared VM's screen should look like this:

You should also verify that the Workstation Server service is started in the Services Console:

If you have enabled sharing, the service is started, and you are using the default port, then the install should succeed without issues.   Also, make sure that the account you specify is a local administrator.   If you meet these requirements, then the install should work normally.
