How Does VMware Do It?
General Session Room

Tony Scott, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Job Simon, Vice President, IT Architecture and Strategy

VMware is on a journey to help our customers transform their IT units to IT as a Service (ITaaS) organization. This journey transforms IT organizations from a traditional business cost center to a service broker that enables business innovation. With this type of a forward-looking model, IT organizations are on a journey becoming more business-focused and introducing a new level of agility within their company.  This strategy also fuels VMware’s own evolution, as we adopt our own solutions in a manner that is both critical and unique.

As part of our VMware-on-VMware dogfooding strategy, VMware develops and utilizes our own products and solutions in areas that we believe will unlock the true potential of the cloud: the software-defined data center, the hybrid cloud, and end-user computing. This three-pronged approach enables us to fully leverage the capabilities of the Cloud while creating a comprehensive, cost-effective, and streamlined offerings for our customers.

CustomerOne is an example of a VMware initiative to internally formalize its beta process, enabling VMware IT to operate as a real-world customer for our products. The goal is to improve product quality during the beta phase, ensuring that we are fully walking in the shoes of our customers. We are also looking ahead to see how we can extend the impact of our solutions to drive data center excellence and accelerate strategic platforms in support of digital business processes. Our vision is to transform VMware IT into a collaborative ITaaS organization.

In our journey, we have seen some great successes and also learned valuable lessons – and are happy to share them.

Ben Fathi, Chief Technology Officer

The technology journey is a recurring cycle of disruption and creation – innovation in its purest form. Our mission at VMware is to ensure that this cycle of innovation will help our customers unlock the true potential of the cloud via the software-defined data center, the hybrid cloud, and end-user computing.

Customers face the challenge of managing the mix of new and legacy technologies, stifling an enterprise’s capacity to innovate and leaving teams overtaxed. Separating apps from the infrastructure allows us to do all of this. Over the last 15 years we have separated the app from the server and are now separating it from the network and from storage, allowing us to put entire network distributed applications into nice, simple containers that we can automatically and securely manage. The hypervisor is strategically positioned at the critical intersection of several connected domains: virtual machines, the physical network, virtual networks, and storage access, with unique visibility and hence the ability to play a key role in the next wave of innovations. There is also dramatic shift underway where providers of software are increasingly delivering their wares from the cloud. These innovations have unleashed a new generation of developers driving a deep shift in platforms and processes. Furthermore, they seek standardized ways to plug in leading data services and perform deep user analytics on top of massive datasets to drive rapid iteration based on customer needs.

These trends impact all industries – high tech, entertainment, education, government, media, manufacturing, healthcare, consumer products and more and promises to redefine the web as a delivery platform. VMware’s CTO, Ben Fathi, will share his perspective on these and other industry trends, how VMware is addressing them in revolutionary ways and how you, our TAM Services customers, are uniquely positioned adapt and reap the benefits in this era.
