vSphere 6 Troubleshooting Webinar Top Questions

A few weeks ago we offered a free webinar on Tips and Tricks for Troubleshooting vSphere V6 based on the very popular session of the same title that we delivered at VMworld US 2015. As always when we talk troubleshooting there were lots of questions, here is a sample:

What is the difference between esx-cfg and esxcli command?
There are several differences: first, esxcli is one command with the ability to work with many options to manage and esxi host, whereas esxcfg- commands are many commands that perform specific functions. Also, esxcli utilizes the full vsphere API and informs vcenter when changes are made, but the esxcfg commands do not. The esxcli is the recommended tool in vsphere 5 and 6.

What is the difference between vicfg and esxcfg?
esxcfg commands are meant to be run on the esxi local shell, the vicfg commands are meant to be run remotely via vCLI or from the vMA.

Do we have any centralised GUI tool to detect network or Storage related issues and not getting into the commands and into the ESXi hosts?
Yes, there is a web client that connects with vCenter and has access alerts on the environment.

Are all logs stored in the same location?
No, take a look at this KB article for logging information for vCenter.

Is there a KB [Knowledge Base Article] for commands to use when troubleshooting ESXi issues?
Here are the docs for the cli

What could be the most likely causes for host getting disconnected from vCenter?
When port 902 is blocked by a firewall or when the port is modified in the ESXi Host but not in vCenter.

Sometimes rescan disconnects the host from VC, Why?
Generally that’s an indication of storage performance issues, I.E., timeouts initiated by the load generated by the rescan.

Does VMware have a tool to read and analyze the logs such as vmkernel logs?
LogInsight gives correlation and visualization, within the host you are limited to standard Unix file processing.

You can watch the recording of this session and get access to all the other questions that were asked and answered here.
