Since the joint announcement in Sept 2020 at VMworld, NVIDIA and VMware have been working to improve the integration between their joint offerings to better address the challenges of enterprises wanting to upgrade their data centers to be AI-ready.
NVIDIA Enterprise AI is an end-to-end, cloud-native, suite of AI and data analytics software, optimized, certified, and supported by NVIDIA to run on VMware vSphere with NVIDIA-Certified Systems. It includes key enabling technologies and software from NVIDIA for rapid deployment, management and scaling of AI workloads in the modern hybrid cloud. NVIDIA Enterprise AI is licensed and supported by NVIDIA.
The new announcements enable enterprise IT teams to upgrade the enterprise data center to be AI-capable by leveraging existing infrastructure such as the VMware vSphere. This also allows IT to eliminate AI infrastructure silos that are difficult to manage and secure. With NVIDIA Enterprise AI, IT can support AI in their core data center, managing availability, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring security of valuable IP and customer data.
With the new offering, VMware customers can:
- Leverage fully integrated, certified, and supported software from NVIDIA for AI workloads on VMware vSphere.
- Develop and deploy enterprise AI applications with NVIDIA AI tools and frameworks optimized for GPU acceleration in vSphere environments, reducing deployment time and ensuring reliable performance.
- Scale out efficiently to multiple nodes, enabling even the largest deep learning training models to run on vSphere.
- Run AI workloads at near bare metal performance with new optimizations for GPU acceleration on vSphere, including support for the latest Ampere architecture including the NVIDIA A100 which delivers up to 20X higher performance over the prior generation. Additionally, technologies like GPUDirect Communications can now be supported on vSphere. This provides communication between GPU memory across a cluster for improved performance.
VMware vSphere 7 Update 2 along with the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software suite integrations address three key challenges:
Risk: It’s difficult to pull together an end-to-end AI solution from disparate parts and integrate them with existing infrastructure. That’s why just 53% of projects make it from pilot to production, with the implementation.
Performance: High performance is critical to AI, machine learning, and data analytics workloads. Data Engineers need to crunch through vast amounts of data quickly. Data scientists need to develop and train their models quickly for fast time to deployment.
Scaling: Going from proof of concepts to enterprise deployments needs effective scaling. This means making efficient use of precious GPU resources, as well as ensuring manageability and availability. The costs of provisioning siloed bare metal AI infrastructure or public cloud infrastructure can also be challenging.
