OpenStack provides us a unique platform to both increase our agility and present a scalable, unified, API-driven software defined datacenter. This allows us to scale uniformly in both the private, and, where applicable, public clouds. Developing a true hybrid cloud infrastructure that allows for more continuous delivery. OpenStack is tricky and problems abound with its implementation, more so if you need to design it for VM reliability and stability.
Our partnership with VMware and VIO allow us to overcome many of the challenges of running a cloud-ready infrastructure with the enterprise-ready features we have come to demand. VMware vSphere, as a hypervisor, is the leader in virtualization. Its benefits for high availability, stability and feature set are unparalleled. Using it as our compute backend within OpenStack allows us the resiliency, flexibility and well established support structure we have come to demand. VIO, as an OpenStack distribution, gives us a well-known, industry-vetted and certified platform with which to expand our OpenStack. It enabled us to simplify our stack and to customize it to meet our needs. Its Ansible-based deployment and management methods are well-known and match our vision of how technology should be managed.
We have taken the ephemeral nature out of OpenStack instances using VMware and our hardware storage platforms. This, in turn, has allowed us to launch 100s of vm’s instantly, without sacrificing persistence, along with avoiding the dangers of copy-on-write images. The VMware drivers for OpenStack represent a feature-rich and stable platform that allows our stack to succeeded in an industry where OpenStack struggles to find a home.
