Set your coordinates for San Francisco in August!

Open source engagement is all about testing limits, finding new ways to solve pesky problems, pursuing a passion, and exploring with a curious mind that’s ready to learn, lead and expand your network of knowledge and peers. You could say the same about the upcoming VMware Explore. In August, Explore takes center stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. For four days, attendees will be enticed by an array of keynotes, sessions, workshops, labs, demos and expert panel discussions, all designed to quench the thirst of a curious mind.

And while you’re sure to find sessions on vSphere and Tanzu and Cloud Foundation at Explore, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn about open source as well. From Meet the Experts to panel discussions, to the technical inner workings of the latest in databases and WebAssembly, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a quick peek at some of the recommended open source sessions at Explore:

Software Supply Chain Security: An Open Source View

There are some situations where you really want a front-row seat: a rock concert, a Broadway play, your child’s recital, for instance. In other cases, you’d rather sit in the back, thank you very much. When the White House summoned open source and tech industry leaders to Washington last spring to chat about software supply chain security, we all got a front-row seat, whether we wanted it or not. Things are different at Explore, where you’ll have an opportunity to grab a front-row seat in a variety of sessions about security … and thankfully, in a much less pressure-packed setting.

Panel Discussion: Open Source and Securing the Software Supply Chain [OSB1522]
Tuesday, August 30 | 11am – 12pm
Join VMware’s CTO Kit Colbert as he leads a panel discussion with industry experts on how the open source community can contribute to securing the software supply chain. It’s a complex problem that demands attention and investment from proprietary vendors and the open source community alike. Panelists include Brian Behlendorf, General Manager Open Source Security Foundation; Timothy Pepper, VMware Principal Engineer; and Kim Lewandowski, the founder of Chainguard.

Learning from Log4j: Getting Ahead of the Next Incident [OSB1813]
Wednesday, August 31 | 9:30 – 10:30am
Brian Behlendorf takes the stage again to discuss lessons learned from the Log4j incident. Last year was a banner year for vulnerabilities, patches and updates. They were unavoidable in some instances, but perhaps we’re getting better at heading them off? Come find out what we’ve learned and how to be better prepared for next time. Because it’s not a matter of “if.” It’s a matter of “when.”

What’s in Your Software: SBOMs and Why They Matter [OSB1533]
Wednesday, August 31 | 3:00 – 3:30pm
You know what’s in your food and the contents of your clothing. Ingredients and raw materials are printed on tags and package labels. But do you know what’s in your software? That’s where SBOMs play a role. SBOMs or software bill of materials is the first step in securing your software supply chain. Because you can’t secure what you don’t know you have. Listen to Sonatype’s Ilkka Turunen provide you with the details on SBOMs and how they can help you on the road to a secure future.
