In an earlier blog post we defined the process of rightsizing and the benefits to your organization. To recap, rightsizing is the process of analyzing the utilization and performance metrics of your infrastructure, determining whether it is running efficiently, and then modifying the infrastructure as needed.
Now we will look at how you can rightsize your Azure infrastructure with CloudHealth. Within the CloudHealth platform there are two rightsizing reports, Virtual Machine Rightsizing and Virtual Machine Perspective Rightsizing. These reports display the available and consumed CPU, memory, and disk metrics for your virtual machines (VMs), enabling you to determine how your VMs are utilized, see recommendations for when VMs should be modified, and take the action to resize your VMs within the platform. In addition to providing recommendations, CloudHealth will also calculate the potential savings you can achieve. The difference between the two reports is that the Virtual Machine Perspective Rightsizing Report was designed for you to be able to filter by your dynamic business groupings (a.k.a Perspectives) including function, VM family, environment and more!
One distinguishing feature of CloudHealth is that you can create your own rightsizing policy. This gives you the flexibility to decide how you want your virtual machines to be scored within each of the battery meters. For example, your customized CPU policy could say your virtual machines are severely underutilized when average CPU is less than 25%. Or your VMs are moderately underutilized when average CPU is less than 50%. With CloudHealth, you have the power to set thresholds specific to your business, to determine the efficiency of your infrastructure.
