How to successfully deploy vSphere Storage Appliance 5.1 in Brownfield deployments

Today we have a new video for you.

This video demonstration was produced as a visual aid to VMware Blog posts which were provided by Rawlinson Rivera who is a senior Technical Marketing Manager in the Cloud Infrastructure Technical Marketing group at VMware.

We recommend you read and familiarize yourself with the content contained within the above links in order to fully understand the context of this video.

In Brownfield deployments VMware vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA) is used to create VSA clusters on ESXi hosts that have virtual machines running on local datastores. In order to successfully deploy and configure a VSA cluster in a brownfield environment with zero or minimal down-time, certain configurations (as shown in this video) must be applied before starting the deployment.

Our video is a little bit long (over 9 minutes), but nothing that a good cup of coffee can’t fix!

Note: For best viewing results, ensure that 720p HD quality setting is selected and view in full screen.

  1. Great video! Getting ready to deploy brownfield style but concerned about existing network port groups. If I have all the port groups required but maybe two additional IE Servers (Vlan 101) and Legacy (VLAN 99) will the set up fail. Consolidating the old and new servers in a plan jane vm network port group would be difficult. Also using physical venter on server vlan 101

Any advice helpful … below is my current network set up and three dell 720 servers with identical configs running esxi 5.1u1.

    vsa-front end vlan 501
    vm network vlan 503
    management network vlan 100

    vswitch 1

    servers vlan 101
    legacy clan 99

    vswitch 2

    vsa-back end vlan 502
    vsa-vmotion vlan 501
