It’s no secret that Retail is undergoing a massive digital transformation. From customer checkout to core  IT infrastructure, all aspects of the retail experience are changing to enhance customer experience, break down organizational silos, and increase sales revenue.

VMware’s retail community has described to us a set of core initiatives driving their 2019 goals. We are working with them to:

  • Securely connect associates, store managers, and workflows
  • Personalize shopper engagements
  • Deliver new merchandizing models
  • Safeguard data and protect customer trust

Shifting Consumer Behavior and Expectations

Rising consumer expectations, rapid technology innovation, faster associate turnovers, shifting supply chain models, and increasing cyber threats are just some of the factors driving these initiatives. Almost every retailer today is navigating the effect that Amazon has had on consumer shopping behavior and  traditional retail business models.

In reality, the pressures retailers are facing aren’t entirely due to Amazon but rather the competition of providing a better customer experience. Retailers need to be aware of the effect digital transformation is having on consumer behavior, and the Digital Natives redefining the shopping journey.

A New Generation of Online Shoppers

Millennials expect a personalized shopping experience in exchange for brand loyalty. They want an integrated experience in store, the option to research and purchase on mobile devices, and a seamless check-out experience when they do.

Technology and the In-Store Experience

Over the next 24 months retailers have big plans to invest in IoT and AI solutions for inventory management, store layout, customer service, and cyber threat management. They’re also relying on partnerships with VMware to help redefine the core IT infrastructure that will launch and support their digital transformation strategies, which include public cloud, digital workspaces for associates, secure store WAN, interactive signage, connected devices, and secure eCommerce.

As we continue to help retailers build their stores of the future, we know retail and technology will become even more inseparable.
