VMware Horizon Workspace 1.8 and what’s new

Last night Horizon Workspace 1.8 was released. While being a minor release it comes with some major new features and functionality.

Citrix-based Application (XenApp) integration

From the Horizon Workspace User Portal, users can now launch Citrix-based applications via XenApp 5.0, 6.0, and 6.5 using single sign-on. This feature requires Citrix Receiver to be installed on the client and supports Mac, PC, iOS and Android devices.

Enhanced VMware ThinApp support

Horizon Workspace now supports ThinApp 5.0 packages. Horizon Workspace 1.8 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications packaged using ThinApp 5.0. Horizon Workspace 1.8 still supports 4.7.x ThinApp packages. This release also adds support for large ThinApp packages (>4GB in size).

Enhanced VMware ThinApp package delivery to Windows desktops

Horizon Workspace now supports delivery of ThinApp packaged Windows applications to all Windows devices, both domain members and non-domain members. Horizon Workspace 1.8 adds a new delivery mechanism supporting delivery of ThinApp packages using HTTP (or rather HTTPS, we simply call the feature HTTP delivery but it uses HTTPS as the protocol). This feature allows you to deploy ThinApp packages to Windows devices outside your Firewall.

Microsoft Office 365 support

Horizon Workspace now supports single-sign-on from Workspace to Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, and Outlook 365 web applications.

Horizon Workspace User Portal and App Center

The User Portal has been enhanced with a new look and feel. End-users can now rearrange their icons. The App Center provides users with self-service category filtering and now identifies the latest applications added. Categories make it easier for your users to find applications in the catalog. The workspace is now all HTML5 based to offer great user experience across different devices.

Web application links

IT administrators can now create Web application links that do not require user authentication, allowing administrators to create static Web links.

Enterprise enhancements

Support for multi-forest Active Directory deployments. You can integrate Horizon Workspace with multiple Active Directory (AD) forests.

multi domain

Support for Microsoft DFS shares as your ThinApp repository. thinapp dfs

Application access policy

IT administrators can apply access policies and select different authentication methods based on application type.

Enhanced Diagnostics, Monitoring, Logs

In Horizon Workspace 1.8, a new Workspace diagnostic management UI has been added. It provides hierarchical diagnostics that shows all VMs and services running and their status. SNMP v2 and central syslog is also supported.

Support for enterprise branding of Horizon Workspace

You can now customize the look and feel of the Horizon Workspace. You can change the colors and add your own logotype.

VMware Switch enhancements

  • Support for Android 4.2 (JellyBean) as the workspace operating system.
  • Support for Android tablets.
  • Enhanced Horizon Mail 1.7x.

Horizon Windows Agent/Client

New installation parameter supporting the new HTTP delivery mechanism.

VMware-Horizon-Workspace-{version#}-{build#}.exe /v INSTALL_MODE=HTTP_DOWNLOAD

The default behavior of the Client is to use HTTP delivery if any other chosen delivery mechanism is not working. This means you might decide to not install the Client using HTTP delivery and thereby use HTTP only when needed.

The new agent now self-repairs the local ThinApp cache if using a shared ThinApp cache and a package is missing in the local cache.
