Introducing VMware Zimbra for Android – A New Fling from VMware Labs!

By Srinivas Krishnamurti, Senior Director, Mobile Solutions, VMware

Tablet We are excited to announce the availability of VMware Zimbra for Android (VZA) as a fling. A fling is a short-term thing, not a serious relationship but a fun one. Likewise, the tools that are offered as a fling from VMware Labs are intended to be played with and explored. None of them are guaranteed to become part of any future product offering and there is no support for them. They are, however, totally free for you to download and play around with!

Today’s fling – the VMware Zimbra for Android – is a native Android collaboration application that allows you to access your email, calendar, contacts, tasks and files from any Android device, specifically smartphones and tablets.  VZA supports any Microsoft ActiveSync compliant email server and also supports the VMware Zimbra Collaboration Server (ZCS).  With ZCS as the backend, VZA offers several additional Zimbra-only features such as Briefcase, Saved Searches, etc. that are not available in any of the Android email applications in the market today.

VMware Zimbra Allows MxToolbox to Offer Robust, Flexible Messaging Management Solution

When MxToolbox, Inc. was founded in 2003, its primary focus was email security: helping small and medium-sized businesses fend off viruses and stem the growing flood of spam.

But as the needs of its customers changed, MxToolbox evolved as well. “Starting around 2006, we saw a drop-off in businesses looking for email filtering,” says Steve Harper, CEO, MxToolbox. “But it isn’t that companies no longer need filtering tools. It’s that they are getting rid of their email servers entirely.”

CB Richard Ellis Closes the Deal on VDI with Technologies from Xangati and VMware

Posted by Raj Mallempati, Director of Product Marketing,End-User Computing

It’s awesome to start blogging again after a “short” break. Yesterday, VMware and Xangati announced the successful desktop virtualization deployment of our joint customer CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), the world’s largest commercial real estate services firm (read the announcement here).  Over the past year CBRE has been rolling out VMware View to more than 2,000 of their employees across multiple locations in Europe and they have plans to extend the benefits of desktop virtualization to their full global workforce.

CBRE selected Xangati VDI Dashboard to help them monitor and manage their network and storage assets while they rolled out their VMware View virtualized desktops across their workforce.  Most of the details are covered in the announcement.  So, I thought I would take a moment to look at some of the reasons why customers like CBRE are choosing VMware to help address the computing needs of their workforce.

Whatcom Community College Virtualizes Student, Faculty, Staff Desktops and Applications

The IT team at Whatcom Community College has been doing some great things with both server and desktop virtualization.  We recently published a full case study on the school’s IT strategy here… Pasted below is an overview of what Whatcom has been doing on the desktop side with VMware ThinApp and VMware View.

After virtualizing the datacenter, Whatcom Community College moved on to the desktop infrastructure. The college’s long-term strategy is to virtualize some 90 percent of its 1,000 desktops, migrate to zero clients and provide remote access to all end users. WCC started by replacing 75 end-of-life devices with Wyse® P20 Zero Clients, with plans to increase to 200 over the coming year and also virtualize an additional 200 legacy thick clients.

VMware Labs Fling — ThinApped vSphere Client

Back in March VMware Labs released this Fling.  We thought it was worth pointing to again. Jonathan Clark from VMware gives a demo of the VMware ThinApp version of the popular VMware vSphere Client. This VMware Labs Fling uses VMware ThinApp to package vSphere Client into a single portable EXE giving you instant access to your virtual infrastructure from any computer.

VMware Thinapp clients are easy to install and port.  All it takes is copy/download the exe file and running on Windows machine, then connect to an existing vSphere server and you are all set to go. It is that easy!  To learn more visit http://labs.vmware.com/flings/thinapp-vsphere.

ThinApp has been used by corporate administrators to deploy thousands of applications to millions of desktops. Use VMware ThinApp to create your own virtualized applications, for more information visit the VMware ThinApp page.

For caregivers in the healthcare industry, virtual desktop solutions hold the promise of ubiquitous and reliable access to patient care applications and data regardless of device or location… But what about benefits for the patient?

Recently I participated in a seminar for the healthcare industry titled “Accelerating EMR Adoption using VDI”. At the event Ryan Winn, CIO from MidMichigan Health was asked to speak to the attendees about lessons learned from deploying 900 virtual desktops at MidMichigan using VMware View, EMC storage, Imprivata OneSign and HP Thin Client Terminals. Ryan started out explaining the workflow benefits gained for the clinicians – which was completely expected.

So….I thought I'd share this script. 🙂
