Choose to challenge

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

If it wasn’t for people courageous enough to effect changes, no progress could have ever been accomplished. This International Women’s Day, we’d like to invite you to join us as we #ChooseToChallenge the status quo, gender stereotypes, our preconceived limitations, our limiting beliefs, and anything else that inhibits us as women to reach our unlimited potential.

International Women’s Day on March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

“To look at her was to take a step back,” and as we look at our VMware ladies and all women for that matter, we find ourselves in total awe. We have seen our team rise to the lockdown challenge, further finetuning their packed schedules, running a household, being prepared for Zoom calls, being a mom, wife, sister, and daughter. We have seen leadership, hope, positivity, compassion, and willingness in times of isolation and even times of great uncertainty. Fire tested adversity, and adversity tested the brave.

Obstacles persist

Like their counterparts elsewhere, African women are taking stock of progress and asking to what extent promised reforms have been implemented. They are also examining why progress has been limited in many countries and seek ways to overcome the obstacles. There is so much to celebrate in 2021, looking back at the year behind us and the increasing wins that women are making in legal forays, gaining more rights and an increasing normalised acceptance and validation of their seat at the table.

In Africa, and not to mention in the IT space, women still have much to challenge and deal with regularly. Choose to Challenge is an initiative geared to instil a sense of pride in women. Encouraging them to charge the way forward, set an example for generations to come, and believe that nothing women cannot do, no industry they cannot enter, and no mountain they cannot conquer.

The power of human difference at VMware

At VMware, we celebrate our people from various dynamic backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Diversity + Inclusion (D&I) is critical to our success at VMware, a company of 30,000+ employees in 169 offices in 63 countries, speaking 70 different languages, with hundreds of thousands of customers globally. We hope you join us in Choose to Challenge and that you stand a little taller as a woman or pass on encouragement and words of praise to the women in your life this International Women’s Day.

Collective action is what makes the impact. And if you think you are too small to make an impact, then you’ve forgotten what it’s like to sleep in a room with a mosquito. Choose to stand proud and to stand up against inequality. We urge you to choose inclusivity, choose diversity, and choose to be the change you wish to see.
