3 Common Myths About Training

It’s a busy world and training is often the last thing on your list. Who has the time or money when there’s so much else to do? The real question is, “Can you afford not to?” Training may be the most important thing you do this year and, with new options, it’s now faster and easier to increase the value of your certification and boost your career.

Recognize These Excuses?
You probably have the perfect reason to avoid training. You’re busy. You can’t leave the office. You’re already certified and there’s nothing more to learn. We’ve heard them all and, luckily for your career, not one of them holds true. Here’s a quick look at new ways to incorporate training into your overscheduled life.

Myth #1: It Takes Too Much Time Away from Work
You’ll never have to leave your desk with online training that’s available when and where you are. VMware Learning Zone is a new subscription-based service with a full year of unlimited, 24/7 video-based training. Top VMware experts discuss the latest technologies to help you resolve issues, extend functionality and increase productivity.

There are other options for custom, cost-effective training. VMware Lab Connect provides self-paced access to technical training labs so you can continue practicing your skills. On Demand Courses deliver modular training and labs with the option to try a course before you buy. And our Onsite Training services are the perfect option for organizations that need to train a large number of employees. The cost per student is lower than a public class, you can tailor the content to your specific needs and class is planned around your schedule, not ours.

Training when and where you need it:

Myth #2: It’s Too Expensive
Training budgets may have been cut but that doesn’t mean you should stop learning. The good news is there are a lot of ways to make the most of your training dollars and keep your career on track.

VMware often has special offers including discounts on top classes, special deals for VMUG Advantage Members, and much more. Our Beta classes are available to anyone wanting to participate in a near-complete course at 50% off the course price. Plus, there’s always free training, such as our self-paced eLearning in local languages and our free webinars for quick and easy knowledge.

Affordable training options:

Myth #3: Training Offers Me Few Benefits
Technical training is one of the best ways to advance your career and set you up for future opportunities. Employers generously reward people who have kept up-to-date on the latest technologies. A VCP certification helps you be successful with official recognition of your technical knowledge, special invitations to beta exams and classes and discounts on events and other services.

Certification and training gives you an advantage:

Now that you’ve run out of reasons to avoid training, take a look at what’s available today. With these affordable options designed to fit your busy schedule, you’ll get advanced training on the subjects that make sense for your career.

Answering Your Questions about the Network Virtualization Certifications

VCP-NVOver the last couple of weeks there have been several questions raised about the Network Virtualization certifications that we wanted to address.

What’s the deadline for earning a VMware Network Virtualization certification holding a Cisco certification?

Due to its popularity, we have extended this program until January 31, 2016.

You can earn your VMware Certified Professional – Network Virtualization (VCP-NV) certification without attending a course (although I recommend it) if you hold any of these current Cisco certifications:

  • CCNA Data Center
  • CCNA Routing & Switching
  • CCNP Data Center
  • CCNP Routing & Switching
  • CCIE Data Center
  • CCIE Routing & Switching

You can earn your VMware Certified Implementation Expert – Network Virtualization (VCIX-NV) certification without having a VCP certification if you have one of the following certifications:

  • CCIE Data Center
  • CCIE Routing & Switching

If I achieve my VCIX-NV certification by using my CCIE, do I also receive the VCP-NV certification?

Yes, under our rules of “inheritance” you would receive both certifications.

If I achieve my VCP-NV certification by using my CCIE, do I have to take a VMware training class in order to earn another VCP or a VCAP (VMware Certified Advanced Professional) certification?

No. The original policy said that a course would be required for candidates who wanted to move to another solution track, but after discussing this with several of you and receiving feedback from the community we reversed that decision.

If you hold any valid VCP certification – regardless of what requirements were used to attain it – you can apply that as a pre-requisite for any other VCP or VCAP certification.

I hope this answers most of your questions about the network virtualization certifications, but feel free to leave a comment below if you have others or reach out to our Certification Support team.

From VCDX Candidate to Panelist

This post was written by Joe Silvagi. Joseph is a Systems Engineer at VMware in the Network & Security Business Unit. He has been in IT for 20 years, with 11 of those involving vSphere implementation and design going back to ESX 2. Over his career he has held a number of positions from administration and design of large enterprise environments, to Director level management on the customer side. With a strong passion for virtualization technology, his drive has helped several companies realize the potential for virtualization early on. He now continues this push by helping customers understand the benefits in the virtualization of network and security.

2015-02-10_1146This past week at Partner Exchange, I completed a week of VCDX panels as a “panelist in training”. I was able to sit in on panels for three different VCDX tracks, mock score all of them, and really get to experience the other side of the table in the defense room. It was an exciting and eye opening week to say the least, having gone from a VCDX candidate to panelist in less than 3 months.

Each night after the panels, I found myself thinking about the candidates that day. What they had said, what they had been asked by the panelist, and how they responded. Contemplating, how would have I responded? Would it have been the same? Would I respond differently to my questions in my defense knowing what I know now? What in the community may have drove them to reply or act in the way they did? Even myself during my defense for that matter.

At that point it came to me, the epiphany that there really is a huge gap in what people think the panelists want or do, versus what they actually want or do. So what will this post contain? Some of the pieces that I can actually speak on when it comes to how some things really work on the panel, with a perspective of recently having experienced both sides of the spectrum.

I want to kill some of the myths out there, the poor information that either puts the program in a bad light, or discourages people from trying.

Introducing The New Official VCDX Directory

VCDX merch

For years now we’ve published a basic directory of all the VMware Certified Design Experts (VCDXs) in order to recognize them for the effort they have put in to achieve VCDX certification. Over time, as the number of VCDXs grew it became difficult for them to update their personal information. A few months ago we began working on a new directory and I’m happy to announce that the new Official VCDX Directory is now available at vcdx.vmware.com with a host of new features:

  • 100% Self Service for the VCDX Holder
  • Searching, Filtering, and Sorting
    • Filter by location, type and/or languages spoken
    • Sort results by name or VCDX number
    • Mentor Flag to identify community mentors
  • Completely re-designed and Hosted on vCloud Air

The goal of the directory is to give customers, partners, hiring managers, and the industry overall a way to validate who the VCDXs are around the world. We will be adding more information related to the VCDX program on the site, but first and foremost this will be the Official VCDX Directory.

If you are currently a VCDX, please review your information and make any needed updates so that it will be complete for everyone to reference.
