How St. John’s University Built Innovative Infrastructure Protection in 10 Weeks

When you work in the IT department of a major university with more than 15,000 students globally, ensuring that the systems that support key functions (think accounting, financial aid processing, student services) are ‘always-on’ and performing as expected is top of mind 24/7. And if an assessment of that IT department’s disaster recovery program reveals it no longer meets your SLAs, you’ve got to act and act fast.

“Given the critical nature of services we support for students, alumni, faculty, and administrators, we wanted our DR strategy to fully reflect the university’s focus on innovation,” says Joseph Tufano, vice president of information technology and chief information officer at St. John’s University. “We also wanted to implement any new systems quickly, so we could focus on other strategic projects.”

Working with VMware, St. John’s used the VMware vCloud® Air™ suite of services to deploy and test the cloud-based DR solution within 10 weeks. The end solution provides St. John’s with robust data protection and continuity preparedness across the board and enables rapid recovery for their ERP system in the event of a disaster. Using VMware vCloud Air Disaster Recovery also proved to have a positive impact on IT’s operating budget as it eliminated the need for an expensive secondary DR site.

“We completed the project in ten weeks. Normally, a project like this would take four to six months,” says Tufano.
