Marriott International is one of the world’s leading hospitality companies – spanning 19 brands in over 40 countries, with over 200,000 associates.
They have been hyper-focused over the last several years evolving the guest experience and integrating technology in all that Marriott does, which is clearly evident with what they are doing in the cloud.
Earlier in 2016, IBM became the first vCloud Air Network partner to offer VMware Cloud Foundation on IBM Cloud. Robert Leblanc, VP of IBM Cloud, took the VMworld stage with VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger to discuss the power of VMware Cloud Foundation on IBM Cloud, which empowers customers with the ease of deployment and management of VMware Cloud Foundation, plus IBM Cloud’s innovative architecture, multi-level security and global availability.
The IBM and VMware partnership saw over 500 companies that are running VMware virtual machines on IBM Cloud – with that customer list headlined by Marriott International.
Marriott wanted to leverage on-prem foundations while maintaining a similar VMware experience in the public space, and that’s what IBM Cloud committed to. Marriott extended their APIs, their templates, their automation into the IBM Cloud, which produced the end result Marriott were looking for.
When their digital portal, Marriott.com saw an increase of revenue come through, it was proposed to build an even better widget than they had existing, which they chose to do in a public space with help from IBM Cloud and VMware.
“What NSX does for us, what Cloud Foundation will do for us, it’s going to allow us portability. It is going to give us the option in which we can flex the consumption of those resources in the public space, without compromising risk, compliance, or security. It removes the barrier of why we can’t use public services. Second thing, it provides a competitive advantage for us… We look at the cloud, especially the public cloud, as being a commodity set of services. We want to be able to leverage the right partner, with the right tool, for the right price.”
Alan Rosa, SVP of IT Delivery and Security Technology, Marriott International
