Announcing the VMware vCloud Architecture Toolkit for Service Providers

Managing clouds is hard enough on its own. That’s why we’re releasing the first version of the VMware vCloud® Architecture Toolkit for Service Providers (vCAT-SP). The vCAT-SP gives service providers the reference documents they need to construct cloud platforms and service offerings built on today’s VMware technologies. These documents include recommended practices and innovative tools already tested in real-world cloud service provider environments.

VMware experts, including the vCloud Air Network Global Cloud Practice Architecture team, wrote the vCAT-SP to give IT managers and architects the most efficient design and support solutions possible – helping you to make the right choices for your business.

For example, VMware vCAT-SP offers ‘VMware Cloud Service Provider Solution Stacks.’ These recommended solution stacks match common service provider delivery models — everything from hosting, managed private cloud to public cloud — with the right VMware products.

Need to know what a service does for your organization? Our service definition documents help service providers figure out their cloud service requirements across compliance, recoverability, business continuity, integration requirements for OSS and BSS systems, service offerings use cases and SLA and OLA’s. It’s your starting point for vCAT-SP.

The initial release of vCAT-SP provides a service definition example document for public cloud; additional example documents for hosting and managed provide cloud will be added at a later date.

The VMware vCloud Architecture Toolkit for Service Providers is broken into seven architecture domains:

  • Virtualization Compute
  • Network and Security
  • Storage and Availability
  • Cloud Operations Management
  • Cloud Automation and Orchestration
  • Unified Presentation
  • Hybridity

Each domain contains documents covering core platform architecture design considerations, key service providers use cases and operational considerations.

To help you understand the ins and outs of vCAT-SP, we’ve also included Solution Architecture and Solutions and Services Examples.

Solution architecture examples give you reference solution designs that utilize architecture domains when formulating a holistic cloud solution. Design decisions driven by requirements, constrains specific to deployment scenarios — all are including. We’re hoping to include solution architecture examples for hosting, managed private cloud and public cloud platforms when vCAT-SP is released.

The same goes for solutions and services examples, which can help you to implement cross-functional service offerings like Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service. We’ll also publish additional value-add service offerings that you can plug into your core architectures as you please. Be aware: some of these offerings may have to come down from vCloud Air or be custom developed by the Global Cloud Practice team to meet certain business requirements.
