Earlier this year, we announced the VMware vCloud Air Network, the evolution and expansion of our existing VMware Service Provider Program. As a result, our customers and partners have had a few common questions about what benefits the vCloud Air Network offers. We sat down with Geoff Waters, Vice President,Global Service Provider Channel at VMware, to get additional detail about the announcement.
Q: VMware recently announced the vCloud Air Network. Why is this significant?
A: The vCloud Air Network is a manifestation of VMware’s broader hybrid cloud strategy, as we aim to meet the business needs for our more than 500,000 customers. The vCloud Air Network includes both VMware vCloud Air and the complete ecosystem of more than 3,800 Service Providers in over 100 countries. This provides our customers unprecedented control with regards to how they deploy workloads in the cloud. Customers get the flexibility to place workloads with VMware, partners or both.
Q: What are some of the key benefits customers can get from the vCloud Air Network?
A: With the vCloud Air Network, customers can expect a catalogue of verified global cloud services – complete with compliance certifications, managed services and vertical market specializations – and enterprise-class security and control over data through local providers. Additionally, through our updated badging program, members of the vCloud Air Network can promote their validated service offerings with three badges: Hybrid Cloud Powered, IaaS Powered, and Horizon DaaS Powered. The badges allow customers to immediately identify a Service Provider’s offering as being a VMware-based service meeting certain technical criteria.
Q: Will customers retain data sovereignty on the vCloud Air Network?
A: This is a very big issue – many countries have laws that data cannot move beyond the borders of the country. That presents challenges for customers who want to realize the benefits of cloud computing, but are restricted in terms of which cloud they can move to. With the vCloud Air Network, VMware and our partners can address the challenges of data sovereignty with partners in more than 100 countries.
