Today VMware vCloud Hybrid Service launched a new tier of storage, Standard Storage. Standard Storage is a low-cost storage option available with the Dedicated and Virtual Private Cloud offerings from vCloud Hybrid Service.
With different tiers of storage, we are providing a choice for end users to select different performance tiers for the various workloads running on vCloud Hybrid Service, and at the price point that works best for a defined budget.
Before we take a look at how the tiered storage is consumed, let’s think about the use cases for different tiers of storage.
The data on most web servers is predominately static data, or has a low change rate, and does not need high performance from the storage. The requirements for this particular workload are usually very low from an IOPS perspective. The Standard Storage option with vCloud Hybrid Service provides organizations with the ability to run these kinds of workloads at a lower cost per VM, making it a more economical option.
Now let’s switch gears to database workloads, which have completely different behavioral characteristics than web servers. A database server predominantly has higher read/write requests and requires an increase in storage performance. The data is not very static; it’s extremely fluid, due to the nature of the application. With SSD-Accelerated Storage in vCloud Hybrid Service, an end user can get better performance to support the high data change rates within database applications.
Now that we have discussed some of the use cases, lets actually look at the new storage option, Standard Storage, from vCloud Hybrid Service.
The first thing to note after an end user logs into the vCloud Hybrid Service Dashboard, is the Storage header, where there are multiple bars displaying overall storage allocation for a vCloud Hybrid Service account. With one click you can see how much storage you have allocated to your virtual data centers (VDCs).
Migrating Across Tiers
One of the key benefits of the different storage tiers within vCloud Hybrid Service is the ability to move workloads across the different tiers. Within the vCloud Hybrid Service UI you can easily move virtual machines between Standard Storage and SSD-Accelerated. Why would you actually do this? Well if you have a workload that is suffering, from a performance perspective, due to higher than expected load volume, you can easily move that workload from Standard Storage to SSD-Accelerated (assuming you have purchased both for the instance you are running in vCloud Hybrid Service).
The screenshots below shows how simple it is to move your virtual machines from one tier to the other.
The new release of this lower cost storage tier with vCloud Hybrid Service provides the end user with more control over the performance characteristics of their virtual machine. Whereas previously you could only control the amount of storage assigned, you can now control the performance characteristics of the virtual machine. This is extremely useful when considering what applications you can deploy in a cloud model.
