Your Cheat Sheet For Understanding AWS Reserved Instances

Amazon Web Service (AWS) EC2 Reserved Instances can offer significant discounts to AWS users compared to On-Demand, pay-as-you-go pricing. These savings aren’t guaranteed, however, and users need to understand how discounts can be applied (and more importantly how they can’t) in order to take full advantage of AWS’ discount offerings. We’ve created a cheat sheet to help you get started.

AWS offers different types of reservations, each with their own restrictions and commitment terms. These discount guidelines, such as reservation scope, are important to know before you commit to a 1 or 3-year agreement because some of them can’t be changed once you buy.

If you’re starting to feel overwhelmed about this level of commitment, you aren’t alone. Many AWS users miss out on potential cost-savings available through Reserved Instances because they feel unsure about term agreements or they had an unfortunate experience in the past with a Reserved Instance purchase that didn’t go as planned.

We’ve created a Reserved Instance cheat sheet to help get you started and make sure your next reservation purchase is a confident one.
