My Ten Leadership Imperatives

BaskTelAvivExecutiveExchange6Our IT leadership team recently had an offsite. This was a team-driven event, and I stayed in the background and actually spoke very little on stage. I was asked to provide some advice and insight for leadership development.  Here is what I shared with my team.

In my opinion, and based my experience, there are 10 imperatives for leaders that become the foundation for everything else.

10) Lead by example (and with integrity) – with everyone, inside and outside your company.

9)  Be the glue with each other, your teams, and your colleagues across the organization.

8) Become the business; don’t delegate strategy.

7) Know and articulate our IT story. Everyone within every group should be able to explain how we enable our customers.

6) Devote ample time to people and culture – it’s a full-time job if you do it right.

5) Keep focus; operations come before strategy. People only want to hear about strategy if the operations are good.

4) Be a decision-maker. Some decisions are directive, a few are through consensus, but a 90% consultative approach worked for me. Find what works for you.

2) Make bold moves around innovation. Incrementalism only gets you so far

1) Align to a greater purpose. Financial security and career satisfaction are important. But, follow a North Star that is bigger than you.
