Carrie Wang, Senior Director – Worldwide Telco Practice

Snapshot

  • Job title: Senior Director, Worldwide Professional Services Telco Practice
  • Years at VMware: 6 years and 10 months
  • First job: My first job was a Service Solution Manager at Huawei. I was responsible for design and sales of professional service offerings such as managed services and customer satisfaction services, amongst other service responsibilities.
  • Fun fact: I’m a big fan of Lego and jigsaw puzzles. All my home decorations are made by myself either from Lego or jigsaw puzzles.
  • Favorite social distancing activity: I like camping.  I enjoy the peace of nature. Every summer, we find somewhere away from the city and just enjoy unplugging outdoors.

VMware Careers: Can you tell us about your career journey to date?

Carrie Wang: I joined VMware in 2015, and I was hired to build and lead the NFV (Telco Network Functions Virtualization) Practice for EMEA. In 2019, I moved to MAPBU (Modern Application Platforms Business Unit) and built the cloud native practice in EMEA. In 2020, VMware  expanded the Telco NFV practice from just EMEA to worldwide, so I took the global practice lead role and moved back to core Professional Services.

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for in the past?

Carrie Wang: > VMware has a great culture. There is a lot of trust and respect with your colleagues. My team and I particularly like the Take1 Program where any full-time employee who works for VMware for 12 months is eligible to receive $5,000 USD to fund external training. Besides the culture, VMware also has great products, and we continue to invest seriously in end- to- end Telco Cloud products from infrastructure to automation to operation.

VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Carrie Wang: I am always inspired by our projects and the difference they could potentially make. The team works equally on both pre-sales and post-sales projects. We focus on Telco cloud solutions of the network side, which is business critical to our customers.

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?

Carrie Wang: Always pursue excellence instead of perfection. Target the best result with a pragmatic mindset. Embrace the problems and challenges as you will grow every time you overcome difficulties. Be a team worker; rely on your team while making yourself accountable for others to rely on.

VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective?

Carrie Wang: First of all, my team is the tigers of the tigers – they are very self-motivated, passionate about what they are doing, and professional in both technical and customer- facing aspects. Secondly, we have a very open and sharing team culture. No one should feel insecure about what they don’t know, and everyone is encouraged to ask for help. You will be amazed how many people will go out of their way to try to help out and answer your questions.

VMware Careers: What is your next career goal?

Carrie Wang: Personally, I love working in the Telco industry. Currently, I’m looking at professional services only, but I’m always open to more opportunities such as in the end-to-end services.

VMware Careers: What do you love about being a Telco Consulting Architect?

Carrie Wang: First of all, you will always be dealing with the most state-of –the-art technologies as Telco technology evolves every two to three years (just like how 2G technology evolved to 5G). Secondly, the role is challenging and fun at the same time. We are heavily involved in pre-sales projects, and we are expected to deliver what we sell. Thirdly, we are a global team which means you will have the opportunity to work on projects outside of your region, such as in Europe and Americas. Lastly, we have a very open and sharing team culture which allows people to be very comfortable to work in.

VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow, what interview tips would you give them?

Carrie Wang: Be confident, be yourself, be prepared.
