Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. This week we’d like you to meet Tim Obagbemi.
- Job title: Inside Sales Manager
- Years at VMware: Two years and nine months
- First job: My first paying job was as an Economics teacher at an all-girls high school in my home country. That experience essentially opened my eyes to the joys of teaching and made me realise the immense passion I had and still have for coaching and tutoring.
- Fun fact: For about six months in 2014, I had an internship at one of the biggest radio stations in my home country co-hosting an entertainment show for three nights a week.
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?
Tim Obagbemi: The first three years of my professional career from 2011 – 2014 was spent in the teaching profession across the primary and secondary school segments. My first foray into IT sales was when I moved to Australia in mid 2014 stumbling on a Sales Development Representative role at a Sydney-based lead generation agency where I essentially cut my teeth in technology selling and all the many intricacies around that. My success at this firm saw me move into vendor land in mid 2016 at hyperconverged infrastructure company Nutanix where I started as an Account Development Representative but grew to an Inside Sales Representative and eventually to an Inside Account Executive role within three years. I joined VMware in September 2019 as an Inside Account Manager and very recently got tapped on to briefly take on the newly created Australia & New Zealand (ANZ) Digital Sales Leader role which has now culminated in my most recent role as ANZ Inside Sales Manager leading our very talented team of Inside Account Managers across our Queensland, NT, Western Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island territories as well as our team of graduate Inside Account Managers across ANZ.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for in the past?
Tim Obagbemi: What has certainly stood apart my VMware experience from other tech companies I‘ve worked for is how very early on, I quickly realized this was a company that essentially walked the talk especially with regards to our core values of Execution, Passion, Integrity, Customers and Community (EPIC2). It was crystal clear upholding these values and making sure they permeated every part of the organization from top to bottom was a key priority for the company. This commitment can be seen in the immense drive around DE&I, CSR, sustainability, etc. – which I must say in today’s world is quite refreshing for a corporate juggernaut as big as of VMware.
VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Tim Obagbemi: An innate drive to succeed! And because success is a journey and not a destination, that drive never stops.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Tim Obagbemi: There are probably two lessons that stand out:
- You don’t have to have all the answers. You must give yourself permission to not have all the answers and trust the insights & leadership of the people around you.
- Accountability is everything! It starts with holding yourself accountable for your actions and inactions.
VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective?
Tim Obagbemi: > The Inside Sales team is responsible for the volume business here at VMware ANZ with well over 10,000 existing customer accounts we are responsible for across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. This means we have to be very strategic in how we engage with customers and fully leverage all internal and external resources available to us to scale, provide proper coverage and maximize engagement.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow what interview tips would you give them?
Tim Obegbemi: Be your authentic self! I know it sounds like a cliché but authenticity always shines through.
