Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. This week we’d like you to meet Lingling Yue.
- Job title: Senior Manager, Offer Management APJ
- Years at VMware: One year and four months
- First job: My first paying job was Product Field Engineer at IBM, one of the first few members of the product support team. We started with a team of less than 10 and expanded to group of 100 people in a few years.
- Fun fact: I used to volunteer as a guide for a local museum for a long time.
- Favorite social distancing activity: Having Wechat group chats with friends or my Nintendo Switch games – Animal Crossing and Zelda are two of my favourites in last two years.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for in the past?
Lingling Yue: I would say that it’s the EPIC2 values that VMware treasures – Execution, Passion, Integrity, Customers, Community. VMware encourages employees to change the status quo as well as encouraging innovation and getting things done. Employees want to do the right thing for our customers, coummunity and planet. I also think that it is unique to see a company that includes giving back to communities as their company goal.
VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Lingling Yue: I am motivated by the fact that every day there is always something new to learn about the industry and about myself.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Lingling Yue: I want to share the advice my manager gave me when I first moved from IBM to Pivotal, and that is allow yourself to be vulnerable. It means we need to learn to be defenceless, unarmed and to put down our psychological guard when communicating with people, listen more and be open-minded about what we hear. It still remains to be a big lesson to me up to today and one that I recall from time to time.
VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective?
Lingling Yue: Besides the conventional manager-employee report line, we also set up virtual component/domain team with team leaders and corresponding team members who specialize in that specific domain area. Each team member can both request for and provide help to others.
VMware Careers: What is your next career goal?
Lingling Yue: I want to lead the team through changes, be it further expansion on scope or whatever challenges the team will face in the future.
VMware Careers: What is your favorite part in your job as a Product Support?
Lingling Yue: I enjoy the journey of going through a long and winding road of troubleshooting, sometimes with pressure from customers, to then finally resolving the issue – that joy of finding and solving a problem is indescribable. This is also where lots of engineers find their career satisfaction – helping customers by resolving their technical issues.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow what interview tips would you give them?
Lingling Yue: Be prepared and demonstrate your interest in VMware Tanzu by understanding what we do. Show your enthusiasm for the role you are interviewing for; this will make you stand out.
