Meet the Hiring Manager: Eric Weber — Director, Offer Management APJ

Eric Weber, Director, Offer Management APJ


  • Job title: Director, Offer Management APJ 
  • Years at VMware: One year 
  • First job: Before I joined the workforce full-time with Siemens Germany to work on IP Routing and VoIP hardware and software, I started a web design business part-time during my studies to help support myself and my hobby (more on that below).  
    With the dot-com boom in the 90s in full swing, a lot of small companies & retailers in Germany looked for a presence on the web to showcase their services and products. Equipped with a PC, a good old-fashioned modem, some web design and programming know-how, and most importantly, a keen interest to keep on learning,  I engaged with many smaller companies to pitch my website ideas and learned to listen to their requirements and shape them into specifications. Once an agreement was reached, I would develop and finally deploy their site to the web. 
  • Fun fact: It might come as a surprise, but Pricing and Offer Management were not at the top of the list of my aspirations when I was young. From early childhood, I was fascinated with anything aviation related. I started to pursue my passion early through various aviation-related hobbies and finally acquired a private pilot’s license (funded largely by my early web design endeavours) to pursue my passion during my spare time. 
  • Favorite social distancing activity: Staying connected and engaged with friends and colleagues on a personal level has been crucial during the last 2 years of social distancing. One of my favourite activities is virtual happy hour. Meeting old colleagues online over an actual beer in the evening has been a great way to stay connected and learn of the latest movements and changes for them personally. 


VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date? 

Eric Weber: I started my working career with Siemens in Germany as part of their service and system testing organization and later moved to the role of technical sales for IP Routing and VoIP Software and Hardware. When I was given the opportunity to work with a new team to drive the adoption of value-added services (location, messaging, video etc.) for the brand new UMTS/3G networks which were emerging in Asia Pacific & Japan, I moved to Asia and engaged with telco customers across APJ to help them find the next “killer app” for their new mobile data networks. While still engaging with the same APJ Telco customers, the focus shifted over the years from VAS technical sales to sales for Intelligent Networks (pre-paid charging & customer care). After having spent a considerable amount of time in various technical sales and direct sales roles, I moved to Pricing & Commercial Management at Nokia where I held several regional and global management roles and finally looked after the Nokia Networks Commercial Management Team for APJ before joining VMware. 

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for in the past?  

Eric Weber:  Easy answer – VMware’s EPIC2 culture. A lot of emphases is placed on EPIC2 with the values at the core of everything the company does. For me and my team, this means not only a great working environment but a clear focus on the people as the company’s biggest asset. 

VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning?  

Eric Weber: There are two which do the trick (or maybe 3 if I include a good cup of coffee in the list: 

1) Working with the VMware team: We do not only have an awesome Offer Management Team with a very strong and diverse background but also a great extended team with the APJ Application & Cloud Transformation Team we belong to. Together with the larger VMware team, we bring the “Village” together to help solve our customer’s problems and make an impact. This is incredibly energizing and something to look forward to every day. 

2) Our customers: Engaging with customers to solve their challenges is extremely satisfying. VMware is a true transformation partner for a lot of our large customers. This gives us plenty of opportunities to listen and understand their needs, challenge their thinking, have ours challenged, and ultimately help them with a plan to reach the intended goal from a technical, business, and commercial point of view. 

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career? 

Eric Weber: For me, the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far are the following: 

Listen Actively – it is hard to spot your own blind spots (called that way for a reason 😉).  

Actively listening to others allows for a more complete picture to form and possibly reveal flaws in my thinking. 

Never stop learning – what I know today is old news tomorrow. Stay curious and inspire yourself with new things to explore. Learn a new skill and don’t be afraid to fail (sometimes in spectacular fashion 😊). 

VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective?  

Eric Weber: The Offer Management Team is at the forefront of VMware’s transition from perpetual to SaaS & Subscription. Being at the tip of the spear not only requires a large amount of agility from all team members but also a very strong desire to keep on learning and expanding our knowledge daily. I’m incredibly proud of the team who rise to the challenge every day and for supporting each other be it ad hoc or during our team sessions in which we share learnings and best practices regionally as well as globally. 

VMware Careers: What is your next career goal? 

Eric Weber: My next goal is to continue supporting my team to achieve their goal of helping our customers in APJ to further accelerate their SaaS/Subscription transition and for them to harness the full value of our products. 

VMware Careers: What makes the Offer Management team so special and why would someone want to join? 

Eric Weber: You get to work with an incredible and fun team of people across APJ, who are leading and influencing a big change in VMware’s transition to SaaS/Subscription. Your role will bediverse with equal customer-facing and analytical focused engagements, and you will collaborate with the most interesting and strategic companies in APJ on their next phase of their digital transformation supported by an incredible portfolio of products.

Eric Weber: Simple: Be yourself, be curious. Do look up our EPIC2 values and the VMware Cloud and App Modernization Value proposition before we meet and ask me anything about them during the interview.
