Our Meet the Hiring Manager series lets you get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. In this feature, we’d like you to meet Srebrina Dimitrova-IIieva.
- Job title: Director, Colleague Support EMEA
- Years at VMware: 4 years and two months
- First job: My first paying job was as a shop assistant in a convenience store in Brigantine, NJ. I ended up there in my early university years, thanks to a Work & Travel program to the US. There I had the opportunity to experience US life and culture while working and having a great time with friends.
- Fun fact: I am passionate about travel and nature and have visited more than 50% of all European countries. While the pandemic slowed me down a bit (just two years, but who’s counting!), my travel routine is returning to normal. My first more exciting upcoming trip in just a few weeks is *drum rolls* trekking in the amazing Faroe Islands in the Northern Atlantic Ocean.
- Favorite social distancing activity: Virtual Happy Hour sessions with my close friends. While we missed getting together in person, we managed to turn the Zoom sessions into a fun and enjoyable way to keep in touch.
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date.
Srebrina: > I started my career as an entry-level IT service desk engineer while still at university. Working and studying simultaneously taught me critical skills such as time management, prioritization, focus, and perseverance. I quickly moved to senior levels and into middle management, holding different supervisory and subject matter roles. Fast forward, I led a large team of engineers, SMEs, and assistant managers responsible for people, customer, and vendor management for a key account. I’ve also held various project and program management roles in major service outsourcing companies as a manager and individual contributor in complex, matrix environments. I started my VMware journey in 2018 as Colleague Support Manager for Central and Southern EMEA. While responsible for colleague’s onboarding, device provisioning, and support, my scope expanded into different services, including audio-visual operations for the region and business operations. In 2019 I was promoted to Senior Manager, and in middle 2021, I took the lead of the entire Colleague Support for EMEA as Director, Colleague Support.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have previously worked for?
Srebrina: > VMware’s unique culture and EPIC2 values are second to none in the tech industry. Not only do we all live and breathe the key values of execution, passion, integrity, customers, and community, but we also combine them with the active contribution of time, talent, and resources to our communities. In addition, VMware enables and empowers its employees to be involved, engaged citizens, and members of local communities, making us all Citizen Philanthropists and a “force for good.” Lastly, the commitment to creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for employees, customers, and communities is fundamental to VMware.
VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Srebrina: > Aside from the alarm, coffee, and my son rushing to school, the thing that gets me out of bed is the feeling that what we do as a team enables VMware employees to make an impact by providing them with seamless and delightful technological experience and support. Knowing that your work makes a difference and impacts VMware’s overall goals is very motivating.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Srebrina: > While change is the only constant, what never changes and defines success is our ability and desire to bring value and contribute. When I look back at my professional journey, I am proud to acknowledge that my work and actions have positively impacted my team, company, colleagues, customers, and teammates. Bringing yourself forward to support and serve others (purpose, community, team, or company) is the one state of mind that has helped me the most to move forward in my career.
VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective?
Srebrina: > A team is the combination of each team member’s values, skills, and beliefs. In Colleague Experience and Technology, we all strive to provide delightful experiences by enabling our colleagues with exceptional technology and support. Focusing on the experience that empowers our colleagues to bring their fullest potential to work is a driving force that makes our team effective and successful.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow, what interview tips would you give them?
Srebrina: > Be authentic, curious, and prepared. As much as we interview you, you are also interviewing the team and company. Be active and curious, and get to know the manager and the team, as finding your “best fit” job is key to your career development and success. Understand the team values and reflect on your ability to support and amplify them through your work and other contributions.
