Meet the Hiring Manager: Jennifer Chronis — Vice President Public Sector Sales 

Our Meet the Hiring Manager series introduces you to the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. In this feature, we’d like you to meet Jennifer Chronis.

  • Job title:   Vice President, Public Sector    
  • Years at VMware:  Four months
  • First job: Sales Representative at a women’s clothing store in Burke, VA
  • Fun fact: I am an Army paratrooper and Jumpmaster. I trained in the Army’s 82d Airborne Division. I have about 45 total parachute jumps under my belt!

VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date. 

Jennifer:  I started my career as a Second Lieutenant in the Army after receiving an ROTC scholarship to the University of Virginia. I spent about ten years on active duty as a Logistics officer and another ten years in the Army Reserve. I retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2010. My tech career started at IBM with my first sales job selling to the Army. I then became the manager of the Army Client team at IBM and held several sales management roles before getting promoted to VP in 2012 to lead the Department of Defense (DoD) business. After IBM, I spent almost five years leading the DoD business at AWS, which was a lot of fun. I moved over to Verizon in 2020 to take on a more significant role as the leader of their Federal business and was then promoted to SVP to take on the entire Public Sector. I joined VMware in March of this year to continue my journey as a Public Sector leader and win the Multi-Cloud enterprise at VMware.

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have previously worked for? 

Jennifer: VMware is unique in that we have such a broad install base of customers whom we have helped over the last 25 years with server and data center virtualization. They are such loyal customers and eager for our help as they continue their digital transformation and embark on their multi-cloud journeys. We are uniquely positioned, like no other, to partner with them on that journey. VMware’s EPIC2 culture is also really inspiring. It’s great to be part of a company that views passion as a core value, along with execution, integrity, customers, and community. Finally, we’ve got really great technology and engineers! You couldn’t ask for more.

VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning? 

Jennifer: The desire to help my customers perform their missions better, serve their constituents more effectively, and improve our country’s education quality. We have a unique mission in the Public Sector, and it is my desire to continue to serve our customers each and every day. It’s all about the mission for my team and me.

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?

Jennifer: The most important lesson I’ve learned is perhaps the most obvious one – the importance of teamwork. In technology, in particular, it takes an entire team of sales, engineering, professional services, customer support, and partners to make a customer successful. So you really have to embrace that team and put it to work for you and your customers.  

VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective? 

Jennifer:  My team is unique because we serve an exceptional customer – those who serve in our DoD, Federal Civilian agencies, National Security, State/Local governments, and Higher Ed/K-12 institutions. These customers aren’t focused on revenues but on helping citizens and students and performing life-saving missions. The VMware Public Sector team is focused on these missions, and they are passionate about them. That’s what makes us such a great team and a great place to work.

VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow, what interview tips would you give them?

Jennifer: Prepare, and be able to articulate your value by providing data. Understanding not only what someone has done, but how they have done it – with supporting detail – makes all the difference in an interview.
