Meet the Hiring Manager: Kyle Coke — Senior Manager Sales Excellence

Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. In this feature, we’d like you to meet Kyle Coke.

VMware Careers: Kyle, tell us about your career journey to date and what you do today at VMware?

Kyle: My career journey began on the front lines selling computers and servers for a Fortune 500 company. Over Twelve years I worked my way up to a directorship role for their West commercial accounts. After my stint in the hardware business, I went on to undertake a role as a Director of Inside Commercial accounts for VMware where I honed my software skills.

Today, I work in Sales Excellence at VMware supporting our Commercial Two (C2) business. We are a tight-knit group of around 150 sellers supporting VMware’s commercial business. One of the first things you’ll notice about us is our sense of community. Everyone here has a “One Team, One Fight” mentality. We are all in this together and want to see each other succeed. With the direction of our sales leader, Chris Kelleher, you will quickly find that you have all the tools necessary to make a name for yourself in this business. 

I learned early on that career growth at VMware is constant. Every quarter we see a handful of our Digital Account Managers get promoted into field sales, management, operations, etc. As a result, we find that we have open sales territories for an extended period of time. This is one of the main reasons that we run our NEST (New Employee Sales Training) on a regular basis. We want to make sure we are consistently bringing in new and strong sales representatives to fill the open territories. 

VMware Careers: Share more with us about the NEST onboarding program for new Digital Sales Reps at VMware?

Kyle: The NEST onboarding program for new Digital Sales Reps at VMware consists of a three-week training class that involves the foundations of selling, product knowledge, and learning the tools necessary for the job. The idea behind this training is to give you all the tools necessary to hit the ground running in your territory on day one. This training is conducted by Managers, current Digital Sales Reps, Specialists, and others within the C2 organization. My coaches and I facilitate each class throughout the 15-day course.  

VMware Careers: What qualities do you think make a good Digital Sales Representative? 

Kyle: Our best Digital Account Managers are organized, coachable and self-motivated. Have good organizational skills in this role means structuring your day to ensure you are as productive as possible. Many of our reps use time blocks on their calendar to achieve this. Being coachable comes down to being willing to listen, learn and implement new ideas and concepts and being self-motivated is something that is essential here at VMware. We look for individuals that have a natural drive to put in 110% to achieve their goals.

Kyle: Our value here at VMware is reflected in our vision: Allowing our customers to run any applications, through any device, on any cloud, securely. This allows our customers to take advantage of a one-stop-shop for all of their IT initiatives rather than having to use various companies that do not integrate well together. VMware Careers: Finally, What advice do you have for Sales professionals who are looking to break into the Tech Industry?

Kyle: First and foremost, know that here at VMware, we hire professionals from an assortment of industries and with varying backgrounds, teachers, healthcare workers, etc. We look at who is behind the person rather than what they do currently in their career. So our advice to you: If you enjoy helping people and thrive in a competitive environment, we would love to have you as part of our team regardless of what industry you are in currently.
