I live by this famous quote, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was fate that I was born in one of Kerala’s smallest towns. However, it was my decision to uplift my career and interview for an intern position at VMware, one of the world’s largest technology corporations.
I am Athira Susan James and I work at VMware India as an Advertising Intern. I am a BA Graduate (Bachelor of Arts) in Journalism, Media & Communication (Nitte University, Mangalore) and am presently pursuing my MBA (Master of Business Administration) in Communication Management from Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bangalore.
The first step towards my career was leaving my hometown for bigger cities for further education and choosing media as my forte. This was not an easy decision to make because it required me to relocate to a new place, meet new people, and build a completely new life. VMware came my way during the first year of my MBA program, where I applied for an internship along with 30 other candidates.
For the internship, there were three stages of selection. The first round was a resume-based selection, for which I revised and aligned my resume with the job description. After my resume was chosen, I was called to a strength-based interview, in which I leveraged supporting slides to push myself ahead of the competitors. Finally, the roleplay & managerial interview was the last stage, which I was anxious about as it challenged my creative thinking, but it worked out better than I expected.
I was quite elated when I was informed by HR (Human Resources) that I was selected for the internship programme. At the same time, I was disappointed that the opportunity was going to be virtual. However, once the internship began, I was more than happy for the opportunities that came to me as it was equal to what an office location provides. Thanks to VMware’s virtual internship programme, I am back home after 5 years, surrounded by nature and a community of people with hearts full of love. Now I will also be able to spend quality time with my mother and grandmother as they have also been able to witness my journey.
The VMware internship program is one of the finest opportunities to learn and advance in your career as a student. From the beginning of my journey here at VMware, I have been supported and guided by my mentor through day-to-day tasks and my long-term project. I was also assigned a buddy mentor, whom I could turn to for all my doubts. Then there is my incredible team, who have made sure that they always keep time aside to make the process of understanding each other’s roles and responsibilities. It is a privilege to work in a company with such full-fledged and diverse opportunities. As I reach the end of my internship programme, I can assure you that it was altogether a thrilling and exciting opportunity to learn, live, and work my way through the opportunities presented to me. I´m glad that I will be able to put what I have learnt from my university into practice.
It was beyond my wildest dreams that I would be able to work as an Advertising Intern with VMware’s Employment Brand Team, a company known for its unique work culture and EPIC2 values. It is a company that appreciates its employees and seeks to deliver the finest possible working environment. VMware showed me that working for a corporation is a process of learning and understanding the company, culture, people, and, most importantly, yourself.
