Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. This week we’d like you to meet Shilpi Mitra.
- Job title: Engineering Manager R&D
- Years at VMware: 5 years and 9 months
- First job: My first “paying” job was working at Yahoo R&D India. I was working with a senior leader on a research project.
- Fun fact: I enjoy dance and crafts. Shaking a leg at a party or home is one of the best stress busters. I have participated in many dance programs at School, District, and State levels. I also love to travel whenever I can.
- Favorite social distancing activity: I made a lot of pen friends during this lockdown.
With the help of family, friends, well-wishers, and my mentors I could conjure up the courage and confidence to apply again for opportunities. This was the toughest time, and I was at the lowest of my confidence. Once I started preparing, my husband helped me, and I was able to clear my interviews with VMware.
Here at VMware, I restarted as an entry-level senior engineer. I transitioned from an engineer to a senior engineer and then an architect on the team. During this time, I have been part of End User Computing and have worked on multiple products at the BU. From our excellent solutions on Horizon Cloud Services (HCS) and Horizon Enterprise (HzE) to the Workspace One journey, I have been part of VMware’s SaaS (Software as a Service) transformation journey.
With time I started working on cloud solutions and got exposure to building microservices and deploying them to a scalable platform.
Currently, I am leading the Workspace One Cloud team which enables our customers to manage EUC product suites seamlessly and provides extended functionality. My team is my biggest asset in this role. We have a brilliant technical solution being built by excellent engineers who come together to deliver the best for customers.
Customer-first focus has been the highlight of all the roles I have played in my career journey and the rewards it gives in ways of building the powerful product with ease of use and the love of customers are extremely satisfying.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for in the past?
Shilpi: VMware has always been an organization that focused on the Future of Work even before the Covid-19. The flexible and open culture is the biggest strength that differentiates VMware. I could join back work after a career break and balance my work and motherhood easily. At VMware, we are provided clear and open communication from our leaders and work together toward making our company vision true. The employees’ voice is heard, and leadership stays connected.
At VMware, I have been leading many initiatives and programs toward our goal of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). The tremendous support we get to propose initiatives for employee welfare and execute the same is amazing. We started Ascent Nakshatra – Return to work program in 2020. Coincidently it was the same time when the pandemic hit. This program was led by volunteers across the organization with the support of leadership. We have been able to make a difference in the lives of 50+ women and able to bring them back to work, enabling them with the latest technology while working with our teams and experiencing the culture.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Shilpi: Being authentic is the way of growing in career and life. When we bring our true selves to work, we don’t make products we craft excellently. What helps in this is the customer focus. I have always kept the end-user and customer in mind, and that helps in building this excellence.
VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?
Shilpi: Our team is building the new AWS-based Cloud Platform. Our goal is to transform the way customers interact with the digital workspace. We are passionate about rapidly developing high-quality software and applying automation and software engineering best practices to everything we do. Continuous improvement is part of our DNA.
We are enabling the new Cloud Platform to scale and manage billions of devices across various operating system platforms and device types. As part of this team, you will provide technical leadership by driving the design and development of major architecture components. It’s a wonderful opportunity to own engineering initiatives and champion a culture of high ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence. You will coach, manage, and mentor a team of engineers.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?
Shilpi: We are building a SaaS platform that is built with the power of Java and Spring-based Microservices. We work with the latest AWS technologies and open-source components. If you think building such a platform for our customers excites you then come and join us on this journey of customer excellence. Be confident in what you know, that’s all I’d say!
