Meet the Hiring Manager: Chaitra Devi, Manager SaaS Platform, Business IT Unit

Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. This week we’d like you to meet Chaitra Devi. 


Job Title: SaaS Engineer Manager 
Years at VMware: 8 years 1 month 
First job: During my college days, I was teaching junior school students part-time. It was fun to share my knowledge and sometimes help with their homework. 
Favorite social distancing activity: During the lockdown, I got the opportunity to spend more time with kids and family, I explored the chef within me and created dishes that I didn’t think were possible. 

VMware Careers: Hello Chaitra, please tell us about your career journey to date?  

Chaitra: In my fourteen years of IT experience, I have played different roles starting from a junior developer, SRE (Site Reliability Engineering), lead engineer, and engineering manager. In my experience, my journey with VMware has given me opportunities to work on different tech stacks and roles, that have helped me in getting end-to-end visibility of the business process. My current role provides me with an opportunity to influence the product roadmap, provide design inputs, continue to innovate, work with our customers, and most importantly help my team members grow and flourish. 

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for in the past? 

Chaitra: Firstly, the culture at VMware is absolutely commendable. An employee here can always expect transparency and clear communications from leaders and the management team. The practice of performing retrospectives and the all-inclusive approach towards corrective actions helps to drive transformational changes in an organization. And I have seen that all through my journey here at VMware. 

Secondly, giving back to the community. VMware provides all full-time employees 40 hours of paid time off to partake in Service-Learning activities in their communities and the VMware Foundation matches employee charitable donations. These are a few of the many ways that employees are empowered to give back to the community. I find that really meaningful and am glad I can do something for the communities around me.  

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career? 

Chaitra: At every stage of your career or life, you will have different priorities. You must make a conscious decision on prioritizing these one over the other at each phase. As I progressed in my career, I had to learn new skills at each step. The software industry is evolving day by day and everyone needs to adapt to be successful. I have been fortunate enough to have mentors, managers, and teammates who have pushed me through these phases of my career. 

VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter? 

Chaitra: So, I work with the Digital Platform Engineering team, under the VMware CDTO (Chief Digital Transformation Office). We build and operate the SaaS (Software as a Service) commerce platform built on cloud-native technologies for our customers with a broader set of consumption choices with our Subscription and SaaS offerings. 

Simplifying, standardizing, and automating SaaS business process policies and systems by implementing a holistic offer-to-cash ecosystem supporting VMware’s transition to SaaS and Subscription.” 

Transformation starts with looking at our end-to-end operations and outcomes, optimizing our operating model to eliminate friction, and finding smart ways to apply technologies that enable the right outcomes with a customer-first mindset. 

VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning? 

Chaitra: I would say that it is the chance to work on fun and challenging problems and help my team impact one of VMware’s most important priorities – finding great talent!! 

VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow what interview tips would you give them? 

Chaitra: I would tell them to read through the job description understand the role, it is important to be passionate about the work we do. We are looking for individuals who are self-motivated, innovative & hungry to learn and contribute towards the order-to-cash Business Domain.
