Citizen Philanthropy in Action: Supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community with Service Learning

At VMware, we believe everyone has something unique to contribute to our society. Our culture of service influences the way we interact with others – inside and outside of work – fostering empathy and building connections. We are all Citizen Philanthropists, empowered to support what is most meaningful to us through VMware Foundation programs.

Earlier this year, VMware received our fourth consecutive 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index. To celebrate this milestone we checked in with Kim Delgado, Staff Solution Architect and Pride@VMware POD Member, to see which Foundation programs she activated to make an impact in her community this Pride Month.

Kim Delgado: I’ve been with VMware for just over 11 years and began my Service Learning journey with a service trip to Cambodia to help a local organization teach community members how to grow organic produce and to preserve and improve the soil and optimal harvest. I also participated in several team events at the Ronald McDonald House, helping other children and their families, before my own child got us involved with our local community theater as well.

I’ve had great friends in the LGBTQIA+ community for as long as I can remember, and my husband and I have enjoyed attending Pride events with our friends in the past, but when my kiddo came out as transgender 3 years ago, we shifted from being allies to advocates and accomplices. Early on, I brought Alex to the VMware campus and introduced him to several of our local Pride leaders, which he loved. Shortly after that, I began getting more involved with our Pride@VMware POD (Power of Difference), and I joined the leadership team as a member-at-large soon after. This gives me many great opportunities to help plan and participate in our events to support nonprofits in the community. One of my favorite organizations that I spend my Service Learning time with is The GenderCool Project. My kiddo Alex as a Champion, and I as a parent, help replace opinions with experiences through positive stories about transgender and nonbinary young people.

All of the VMware Foundation programs, and our EPIC2 values, along with the DE&I work that we lead, create this amazing culture of caring and support diverse communities globally. I am always so inspired by my colleagues’ participation in these programs, and the positive impact we have on so many nonprofits around the world.
