Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You’ll learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. This week, we’d like you to meet and get to know Iain Mobberley.
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?
Iain Mobberley: For me, it all started aged 16 on a BBC Micro and grappling with putting code together in BASIC. I really loved trying to build something from scratch in software. Of course, things have changed somewhat in the last thirty years! Over the last decade, I have spent time within partner organisations, so coming to VMware is my first venture into the company responsible for creating the software for our customers. I have always individually or with my teams been focused on solving problems through services and this is a truly exciting opportunity to be able to help so many organisations as they look to change the way they work and use software and services in their digital transformation. It is one of the most satisfying feelings when you delight a customer with a solution that solves a problem for them.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?
Iain Mobberley: Joining during a Global pandemic was always going to be a challenge. However, I have found the teams at VMware to be some of the most supportive I have ever experienced. Everything is underpinned by our EPIC2 values which are quite extraordinary. Every organisation has a set of values that they wish to operate under. At VMware, those values are lived and breathed by everyone from the CEO to our team in the field. It is quite astonishing and something to be hugely proud of. I have been a customer or partnered with VMware since 2001. Right-back when virtualization was a tough concept to get your head around in the WinTel world. Since then of course VMware has come a huge way and the culture and values underpin that for our people. That does not stop us always pushing forward our innovation and within Tanzu Labs we have a growing team that is focused on helping our customers understand and learn as well as adopt our technologies to move forward. The last thing to say about the VMware Tanzu teams is that we really are like a start-up within a large corporate organisation. This brings huge advantages as you look to grow.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Iain Mobberley: Firstly, and most simply, it has to be about the people that you work with day in and day out. It’s important to embrace different personalities, work with people at different stages of their careers, and always try to drive success through those individuals in the wider teams. We can usually learn new skills but typically you cannot change who you are as a person. Secondly, always look to challenge each other, grow our skills and learn together as a team. In our industry, I think it is that learning and change that keeps us engaged.
VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?
Iain Mobberley: The goal of VMware Tanzu Labs is to help customers transform the way they build, run, and manage applications in a modern cloud world. We want to take the hardest problems our customers have and solve them. Through our well-defined methodology, we can both build the capabilities they need to be successful and further deliver an outcome or win for their business. It’s powerful and our customers really do love it.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?
Iain Mobberley: I always believe in focussing on the individual. I love people who love being challenged, want to work as a team, and have some fun along the way. It is hugely important at the interview stages that a candidate is themself. Try as hard as you can, in what is always an artificial environment to bring your ‘true self’. We will then work hard to establish how we can make you successful. Employment is a partnership, especially at the interview stage. It should be as much about the applicant working out if they can enjoy and drive their success with us as the other way round. We will always look to qualify correctly to ensure that success.
