Our Meet the Hiring Manager series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You will learn about our hiring managers’ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview experience. This week we’d like you to meet Roz Gregory, Roz has been with VMware since 2012 and currently oversees Customer Success in APJ (Asia, Pacific, Japan). Have a question for Roz? Please leave a comment on this post.

VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?

Roz Gregory: I started at VMware in 2012 working for Craig Dobson, Vice President, Professional Services APJ (Asia, Pacific, Japan) – we had worked together before and he knew that VMware’s community-oriented, passionate, service-learning environment would appeal to me. He also said, “this company is growing and good people do well, so I’ll be happy if I keep you for twelve months”. I moved on in six, so he was right — (as well as tremendously supportive and gracious). Then, the vFabric (apps) line of business was spun out into VMware Pivotal Labs and the rest, as they say, is history! Running Customer Success across APJ for six years as part of a global, high-growth subscription organization in the cloud era is not for the faint-hearted, but we survived, making a new market and learning volumes along the way.

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?

Roz Gregory: For me, VMware’s  EPIC2 values were first embodied by ex-VMware CEO Paul Maritz who always said “for those of us here (VMware), it’s important to always remember that we are incredibly fortunate, so be kind and always do the right thing by your colleagues, your partners, and your communities because when we are successful, and we will be, you want those same people to pat you on the back, and say ‘we’re glad’ and share in that success with you. That’s how I approach every day.

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?

Roz Gregory: Two things remain constant in my career. Number One: It’s all about people and relationships. Number Two: What goes around, comes around. Many of the difficult situations I’ve handled have been helped by rich relationships built on common values. A lot of people have got my back, and similarly, those people know I’ll go to the mat for them every time.

VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?

Roz Gregory: The goal of VMware Tanzu services is to help customers transform the way they build, run, and manage applications in a modern cloud context. We can genuinely take the hardest problems our customers have (with apps) and solve them, through pairing, both building the capabilities they need and also delivering an outcome or win for their business. It’s powerful and our customers love it.

VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?

Roz Gregory: Always bring your authentic self to an interview. I can figure out if the skills and experience fit, but what gets you the job is a unique mix of attitude, enthusiasm, values, and emotional intelligence that will contribute to a better team overall. You can’t plan for what/who’s already in the team, so you have to trust that the best “fit” will be when you are totally true to yourself and the role.
