Manny Alves

Senior Manager, Customer Success

Home Office, Illinois

  • VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?

Manny Alves: My career in software started as a consultant at two different product companies. The first was catered to risk mitigation with an asset and liability management solution for commercial banks; the second evolved into a portfolio management product for buy-side asset management firms. I spent about nine years working for the latter, the majority of which were client-facing consulting roles. There, our consulting teams were responsible for all relationship management, implementation, and support work – we were extremely busy! I relocated from Boston to Chicago in 2010 to launch a new office for the company and went on to help build our business significantly in the Midwest. As we continued to grow and mature, we transitioned our customer model to have distinct teams for Support, Implementation, and Customer Success. It is at this point that I became formally responsible for Customer Success. I came to VMware through the Pivotal acquisition in January of 2020, having about three years of tenure. At Pivotal, I was hired as one of the first members of the Customer Success Team. Since that time, I have held a few different leadership positions within the team, most recently with responsibility for the North Central area. In short – making the transition from working with small businesses to large enterprises has been a unique and extremely motivating challenge.

  • VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?

Manny Alves: Leadership! We have amazing leadership in place. Our leadership coming into this year has an extremely clear vision as to how our product portfolio will yield outcomes for our customers.  Combining Pivotal’s application strategy with VMware’s leading class virtualized data center components puts us in a really great position to help our clients achieve their desired application modernization outcomes.

Furthermore, I am extremely encouraged by the significant investments that VMware has made in cloud-native and open source software providers to form the Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU).

  • VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?

Manny Alves: Cliche, sure, but relationships matter. And I’m not referring to those that are advantageous to you from an upward mobility perspective. I have gotten an immense amount of fulfillment through helping the people who have worked on my teams over the years – many of whom I still actively mentor. We have worked together to move into different industries, gain admission into graduate education programs, and in general, create and execute plans for the next steps in their careers. I have a lot of pride in this work – if you can even call it that!

  • VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your team’s charter?

Manny Alves: We are a Customer Success team responsible for owning the customer lifecycle within the MAPBU. This begins with onboarding and implementation, continues through adoption and enablement, and ideally results in high satisfaction and renewal. As a member of the team, you’ll work with some of the world’s largest enterprises, and help them to develop and execute on their modern applications strategy.

  • VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your team, what interview advice would you give them?

Manny Alves: Spend some time understanding what it is that you’re looking for in your next role. Why are you looking to leave your current role? What drives you? What do you need in your next role to ensure your excitement and success?  How will it help you pursue your longer-term career goals?

Once you’ve found the opportunity that meets your needs, commit! Learn everything you can about the company and role to confirm your initial impressions that it may meet your needs. Use the interview process to make sure the role is exactly what you are looking for – and we’ll commit to doing the same.

Above all: Be yourself. Be prepared. Stay calm – remember we are friendly!
