Meet Purnam Sheth, Vice President, Blockchain Engineering. Purnam has been with VMware since January 2020 he currently leads the teams that are building VMware’s Enterprise Blockchain SaaS platform and has many roles open across his organization. Read on and get to know Purnam.

VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?
Purnam Sheth: I started programming in the 4th grade on a statistical symbolic language called APL – it is a crazy (and powerful) first language to learn – but what it taught me was innovation and perseverance go hand in hand – and that it applies to everything in life. I have been lucky to be part of industry firsts in multiple software companies over my career. I started in the networking industry working for Nortel and Cisco – creating and building products from the ground up that have literally shaped the industry. Along the way, innovated with technology (patents) and developed a keen sense of what takes to build high-quality engineering products and teams. Real-time networking and operating systems lead to distributed systems, and then cloud and applications. Throw in a couple of startups in AI and Quantum Computing to round out my journey at taking technologies to market, and scaling the engineering teams from idea to product delivery at scale.
What I really love is marrying technology innovation while delivering great products and building great teams. And the fact that every day is a learning and growing opportunity.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?
Purnam Sheth: VMware really emphasizes a balanced approach to innovation, product delivery, people development, and giving back to the community. I was blown away with our Service Learning program where VMware gives 40 hours paid time for each employee to contribute back to their community. This is a real commitment to making a difference. On the innovation side, our Radio innovation conference — the premier R&D conference — where 1000’s of engineers compete to be able to attend and show their latest innovation – it is a culture of innovation right at the grassroots. Harness this power, empowered and innovative, and the result is a great culture that we live and breathe daily.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Purnam Sheth: The biggest impact I can make is around the culture and quality of the team. The team’s ultimate success is defined by the cultural norms and the high expectations we set for ourselves. As I have taken on more senior roles, building this great environment where people thrive and grow is incredibly important. Part of the culture is establishing your principles and translation to how the team works together – these are the written and unwritten rules on how we drive hard, innovate, deliver, and have fun. Never forget to have fun and celebrate, even in the toughest situations. Establishing a growth mindset is critical when navigating the roadblocks that will happen. Taking the challenges and making them opportunities to push the envelope, think out of the box, and a never give up mindset.
VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?
Purnam Sheth: My team is building the VMware Enterprise Blockchain Platform – A cutting edge cloud and blockchain technology platform that is powering the world’s mission-critical businesses. We are a fast-paced engineering team taking our blockchain technology into real enterprises in a large growing market. We are looking for strong SW And Test Engineers who love technology, love to deliver quality products, with a real growth mindset
