VMware Careers: Kit, you haven’t worked here long… Coming to VMware, what are your favorite parts of the company so far?
Kit Beall: It would absolutely be the culture – and the quality of the people that are all here to execute on a common vision. If you look at our leadership, everyone comes with very high integrity and a focus on both the success of VMware and the success of our customers, partners, and employees. There is a strong feeling here that we can change the world – and as a software company – we actually have the tools that are building that next foundation for the future.
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career leading up to VMware? What do you feel you’ve taken with you from the previous positions you’ve held?
Kit Beall: I started in a sales engineering job that quickly became a sales job. Over the course of the past 25 years, I’ve worked for both big and small companies. What I’ve found is that I enjoy roles where I can build new businesses. VMware is the best of both, where you can have an impact and be able to go create like at a start-up – and at the same time, you’ve got the ability to scale that up in a big way because we are also going after markets that are giant in size. As I look at my career journey, that makes VMware really appealing.
VMware Careers: What do you look for in a company when applying for/ accepting a job? How did VMware demonstrate those qualities?
Kit Beall: For me, it is really a question of “What’s the opportunity?”. I’m also always looking for a company where I can learn something. I look for a leadership team I can learn something from, and for an environment that rewards success. I don’t mean just financial rewards but being able to grow and make a difference. Between the markets that we’re pursuing, the quality of the leaders, and the opportunity to have an impact, VMware checked all those boxes for me.
VMware Careers: What are some of the qualities you look for in a candidate when interviewing?
Kit Beall: I’m looking, of course, for the basics – expertise and skills – but I’m also looking for a few other things. I like to hire people who want to make a difference and make something happen. Some people might call that ambition, which is probably a good word for it, but what I’m looking for is a little bit more: it’s that “X factor”, that excitement or spark and grit to get things done. I also want to find people who are consumers of information, want to become experts, bring new ideas forward, and synthesize all the different pieces.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?
Kit Beall: Number one is: be prepared. Do your research. Look us up on LinkedIn, read our annual report, Google us, look up some news articles. To me, someone coming to an interview is giving a sales pitch. Be able to articulate the unique value proposition that you bring to the company, because I know you have one and I want to hear your story. Another point is to be persistent. Send that follow up email and let us know that you want this role. Lastly, bring your enthusiasm. Bring to me the level of engagement that I would expect that you would take to the customer. If I can’t see it in the interview, then who’s going to see it?
