VMware Careers: Gregg, tell us about your career journey to date?
Gregg Hedstrom: For the last year, I served as the Vice President of the Dell Technologies Synergy Acceleration Team. Our mission is to create accretive revenue that VMware has with Dell. Prior to joining VMware, I served as Vice President for the Americas Commercial Division of the Modern Data Center Team with Dell EMC. My team focused on delivering Converged, Hyper-Converged and traditional storage solutions to organizations in North and South America. I was responsible for ensuring that customer-facing sales and service professionals in the regions understand and communicate the unique value that Dell EMC brought to customers and business partners. Before my role in the Modern Data Center, I was Vice President of Americas CPSD Sales where my team focused on delivering Converge and Hyper-Converged technologies to meet customer business challenges. I was COO/Sales Strategy Lead for Americas Enterprise Sales supporting an organization focused on attracting, retaining and expanding corporate customers in North and South America, and guiding their Digital and IT transformation. Additionally, I helped to build and shape the sales strategy of the Americas Enterprise Field Sales Organization. While in my COO role, I played an integral part in the merger of Dell and EMC as the Regional Liaison role as part of the VCIO. My primary responsibilities were Day 1 execution and field readiness in North America. Prior to those roles, I held various sales and sales management roles at Dell EMC.
VMware Careers: How does VMware differ from any other tech company you have worked for?
Gregg Hedstrom: VMware is very similar in many ways to other tech companies. All companies have challenges around diversity and competition for talent, but VMware is committed to changing some of those dynamics. My team and I believe in the technology and its benefits as we have all seen what it can do for customers. At VMware, innovation doesn’t stop. We learn fast and continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible to support the evolving needs of our customers.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Gregg Hedstrom: Grit, accountability, and hustle will carry you far in your career. I always advise to actively seek mentorship from the people who inspire you and in return to actively mentor those that are looking to move up in their career. Finally, the best leaders that I’ve worked for have always had an open-door policy for communication. I’ve modeled that in my career.
VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?
Gregg Hedstrom: Our mission is to deliver solution-based outcomes aligned to customer needs through territory prioritization that fosters maximum productivity, scale, revenue, and penetration within our commercial set of customers across the United States. We are a newly built-out team, and we’re looking to have significant growth over the next year, and to achieve this growth we will be hiring aggressively over the next quarter.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?
Gregg Hedstrom: Make sure to share what you are proud of achieving during your career, always highlight that up-front. If there are any things that you think might be a red flag, address those up-front rather than hope a question isn’t asked about it. It’s okay to interview us as much as we are interviewing you. There are several opportunities you can pursue, make sure the one you choose is the one that’s the best fit for you.
