Meet The Hiring Manager: Yvette Edwards, Director, Solutions Engineering

This week we want you to meet Yvette Edwards, Director, Solutions Engineering who works from her home office in Florida and has been with VMware since 2018. Yvette leads a Sales Engineering team covering Strategic Enterprise Accounts in Florida, her dynamic team is responsible for bringing customers through secured, multi-cloud and business mobility transformation. VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date? (High-level career history prior to VMware, and share if you’ve had multiple roles/moves in VMware)

Yvette Edwards: I received a Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from George Mason University.  Two weeks after graduation, I started my career as a Software Engineer at AT&T. I really enjoyed my first job because I loved creating software to solve problems. After five years, I realized that AT&T was starting to outsource some of its engineering work, so a friend of mine suggested we go to a career fair. At the career fair, I came across Oracle and they were hiring for a role I never knew existed. The role was for a sales engineer. The word “sales” turned me off at first until it was explained to me that the role helped customers solve their problems with Oracle software. Since it still involved problem-solving, I took a chance. That was my first role as a Sales Engineer, and I have not looked back since!

I have been a Sales Engineer and Sales, Engineering Manager, for the past twenty-five years at several companies – Oracle, Symantec, Veritas and now VMware. I was hired at VMware in 2018 as Director of Channel SE (Solution Engineering) Strategy. I joined the SE Strategy team to help develop the strategy for the Americas Channel Sales Engineering team. In this role, I developed the go-to-market strategy for the VMware Partner Organization. This included helping VMware Partner SE’s learn new VMware technologies and earn new capabilities that would make them stronger partners to VMware.  In 2019, I took a new role at VMware as the Leader for the Florida Enterprise Solution Engineering team.  In this job, I helped my SEs deliver successful outcomes for the Top fifty-five VMware customers in Florida in varying industries such as cruise lines, utilities, banking, retail, and pharmaceutical.  In 2020, I again took on a new role as the Director of the US Private Sector South Region.  The South Region comprises of the following states:  TX, OK, LA, AL, VA, NC, SC, GA and FL. My new team consists of six SE leaders and forty SEs overall.  I love this new role as I have been able to expand my exposure to many more customers and many more employees throughout VMware. I am lucky that I can continue to grow in my Sales Engineering career here at VMware.  As companies tackle the 4th industrial revolution of digital transformation, VMware is the vendor they chose to help them succeed with their digital transformation projects and help them transform their business to succeed in the future.

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?

Yvette Edwards: I came to VMware for the great technology, but I stay because of the great culture. VMware is different than any other tech company because VMware role models and leads with our core (EPIC2) values in everything we do. VMware believes in technology as a force for good. We strive to help companies that help others through our technology and our staff. We spend time within the community helping those in need or volunteering in times of need such as hurricanes here in Florida. Within the company, everyone is extremely collaborative, which makes working on projects and initiatives extremely fun. VMware employees are very diverse, and our culture is extremely inclusive of all different backgrounds.

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?

Yvette Edwards: The biggest lesson I have learned is to never stop learning.  Sales Engineering is a very dynamic career that is constantly transforming at a rapid rate.  It is imperative to have an open mind and be receptive to change and new challenges. I learn most from the talented people I work with every day.  I enjoy taking time to get to know my team and hearing their diverse experiences and mindsets. I also have learned to not be afraid to ask for help or ask to learn more if you are not strong in any skill set.  VMware has a great selection of career development programs where you can learn by taking external classes, pursuing additional college degrees or taking on new tasks from another team within VMware.  As I have continued to invest in my personal growth, I have simultaneously been able to grow in my career because I have never shied away from taking on new roles with bigger responsibilities.

VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?

Yvette Edwards: I lead the South Solution Engineering Organization in the US Private Sector Organization. Our team charter is to ensure customer success as they begin the journey of being a lifelong VMware customer. The Solution Engineer engages with the customer in a presales capacity educating the customer on how VMware products and solutions can help their company achieve their desired business outcomes.

VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?
