Read on to get to know Emer’s own career journey and what she looks for in people when she’s hiring for her highly innovative global team.
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?
Emer O’Neill: My career started as a Desktop Support Engineer working for Motorola in Cork, Ireland. Truth be told I met my partner there and after two short years decided to travel to New Zealand where I worked as a Lead Support Engineer in the largest bank based out of Auckland, I then went on to work in similar roles in Australia returning to Ireland after three years. This experience allowed me to discover my real passion – leading and developing people. In June 2007 I was successful in acquiring a role here at VMware as a Technical Support Engineer. VMware offers huge opportunities in terms of growth and development. Over the following few years, I worked as a Regional Escalation Manager, which was both challenging and rewarding. When the opportunity arose for me to work as a people manager I jumped at the chance. I found that this is truly where I wanted to be, and have worked in a variety of leadership roles since 2014, most recently forming the first R&D Product Security team in Ireland. Innovating and pushing myself out of my comfort zone have been key in my career journey, and the VMware culture and people truly support this.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?
Emer O’Neill: Since I started at VMware I have been impressed with the strong values and culture. There is a passion to innovate which is infectious and being part of the journey from on-premise to the cloud has been a privilege and a huge learning. VMware actively demonstrates it’s commitment to it’s EPIC2 values and has a strong emphasis on giving back to the local community by providing all employees 40 hours service learning per annum. Working at VMware is exciting and rewarding in that you truly feel valued and also have the opportunity to do good.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Emer O’Neill: Follow your dream and be true to yourself. Work hard, seek out mentors to enable your growth. VMware offers an abundance of resources to help you live your dream and be successful. Know your limits, hire smart people and don’t get in their way, learn from them and know when to ask for help and of course where to offer help.
VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?
Emer O’Neill: Our organization’s charter is to protect VMware customers and brands by driving security-risk mitigations and compliance enablement for our products and services. We have a global team of highly motivated, talented and passionate engineers who work hard and collaboratively across VMware to ensure security is baked into every aspect of development. The teamwork both pre and post software release as trusted advisors to provide a high level of assurance to our most important asset, our customers.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what interview tips would you give them?
Emer O’Neill: Come prepared and be yourself. You know your strengths and opportunities for growth, so sell yourself. Read about VMware, understand the strategy and product portfolio. Identify where you fit in, what you can bring to VMware to ensure its success. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about security and have the potential to learn, develop and grow with the company – you don’t have to check every box in the requirements but show your passion and enthusiasm to learn.
