This week we want you to meet Michael Zamora who is based out of our Austin, Texas workplace. Michael joined VMware in December 2012 as an Inside Account Executive. Since then Michael has progressed his career through many different roles including Strategic Account Manager, Strategic Account Executive, all the way to his current role as an Inside Sales Manager. Michael is also a member of VMware’s Latino POD (Power of Difference). Want to learn more about Michael? Read on!
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date.
Michael Zamora: I joined Dell Technologies, right out of college, in their consumer sales division – selling PCs and peripherals to consumer clients over the phone. I did that for two years before joining the small and medium business division as a Direct Sales Rep. Within a year I became a Large Opportunity Rep and started selling server, storage and networking based solutions to clients. I remained in this role for roughly two years. When in this role I started hearing about a software company called VMware, from Palo Alto, expanding their sales office in Austin. After just over five year at Dell I joined VMware, as Commercial Inside Sales Rep (ISR), covering Los Angeles. I’ve now been at VMware for almost seven years. My first two years were as an ISR for Los Angeles & the Pacific Northwest (PacNW). I then became a Strategic Account Manager (SAM) for PacNW and Northern California and finally in a newly created segment called Commercial Preferred covering San Francisco, Los Angeles and Dallas. My current role which I’ve been in for many years is managing one of our West Sales Commercial teams.
VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have worked for?
Michael Zamora: VMware is different to any other company I’ve worked for for several reasons. Firstly the VMware foundation program allows us to give back to the community in more ways than I’ve expected. Secondly, the way we leverage our own technology to onboard, continuously train and sell to both our internal and external clients is VERY unique. Lastly, the opportunities at our disposal are difficult to quantify, ask anyone who is part of the VMware community. When you work here you can see/feel the potential for growth, both personally and professionally.
VMware Careers: You are a member of the Latino@VMware POD (Power of Difference) tell us what this means to you.
Michael Zamora: Our POD lead, Kasie Joseph, likes to say you don’t have to BE to Belong…I love this, because, especially for me, I grew up Latino, but didn’t speak the language. I’ve discovered that others in the POD grew up the same way and feel an instant connection to them. Kasie and the other Latino@VMware POD member have really helped me to grow by encouraging me to speak up and be heard. Being a member of the Latino@VMware POD has given me confidence, helped me meet new people that I otherwise would not have met and overall it has helped me develop on a personal and professional level.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Michael Zamora: Success in your current role is truly the enabler to other opportunities within VMware. Working hard in your current role and proving yourself will lead you to the next steps in your career.
VMware Careers: Your team is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organization’s charter?
Michael Zamora: My Manager, Inside Sales Director, Kyle Coke, likes to make the analogy that our team is like a college basketball team. We have a mix of “one and dones”, sophomores and juniors that declare early and seniors – who I would label as the rock stars in our organization; they are consistent high performers, but content to continue to learn, make a solid living and enjoy the benefits of living in Austin. We’re always looking for hungry talent. People who will embrace change, focus on the business, and how our solutions can impact our customers. Finally, we look for someone who is coachable and loves working on a TEAM.
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow for a role in your org, what advice would you share with them?
Michael Zamora: Prepare – get to know the people you’re interviewing with; learn about their business by speaking with people who work in the organization today – have a plan…” fail to plan, plan to fail”.
