VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?

Leon de WerkerI started my career as a Field Engineer in the financial sector for Dow Jones. From there, I developed from an Engineering role to an Operations Director role, and then into a Pre-Sales leadership role. After my tenure with Dow Jones (twelve years), I moved to a service management/service delivery company, and from there to BMC Software into a Sales leadership role where I spent five years. After my time with BMC, I moved to Mercury Interactive, which was acquired by HP in 2007, in 2011 I joined Servicenow and in July 2016 I came onboard with VMware.

Throughout all of these roles I was involved in selling and business development, be it as an individual contributor, or leader. I have always liked stepping off the bench and back into a hands-on sales role. I don’t like to lead from a spreadsheet, I think it is important to lead with my feet in the mud and for the last three years I have been leading with my feet in the mud and transforming the VMware Benelux business.

VMware Careers: How is VMware different than any other tech company you have worked for?

Leon de Werker:For me there are two reasons. Firstly, every company talks about its people being its most important asset; VMware is different because we actually mean it!

Secondly, VMware is a socially aware company and is deeply connected with global and  societal issues. We believe our technology is a force for good in the world. We also lead from the top down when it comes to our approach on sustainability and VMware Foundation work. Overall I am very proud to say that we are a very socially aware company.

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you have moved upwards in your career?

Leon de Werker: One of my favorite quotes is: Happy cows give more milk! If you are a humble, enabling leader then your people will appreciate it. They will be more loyal and the results will ultimately speak for themselves.

VMware Careers: What do you believe the future holds for VMware?

Leon de Werker: VMware leads and defines market trends with what we do. We have defined the Software-Defined Data Centre (SDDC) landscape, as well as the hybrid and multi-cloud market, and we are in the process of re-defining the security market. The Benelux business has been excelling in what we have delivered for the last three years and we will continue to excel as we continue to introduce these and more solutions to the market. We will continue to measure customer success with the Net Promoter Score and ensure that our customers are thriving as a result of the solutions we are selling  them.

Benelux as a region is leading the way in EMEA, and we inspire customers with our innovative approach; they understand that with our technology they will become leading edge. For example, we know that 5G is coming and we need to continue with how we are going to help customers take advantage of that while also being a force for good and mindful on how we impact society.

VMware Careers: Why should a technology Sales person consider VMware for their next career move?

Leon de Werker:  If you are looking for your next challenging role, a role where work-life integration is integral, where you are encouraged to bring your authentic self to work and where you can drive your career with real purpose…Then look no further than VMware!
