This week we chat with Gerd Mick, who has been with VMware since 2014 and is responsible for VMware’s Networking & Security business in the CEMEA Region (40+ countries). He runs a highly motivated team of people covering Sales, Pre-Sales, Marketing, Partner and Post-Sales. The common goal he sets for his team is simple: 100% customer satisfaction, deliver the highest value in time and budget. Gerd has several roles open on his teams: read on to get to know him.
VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?
Gerd Mick: I joined VMware in 2014 in a strategic sales position for Central EMEA (CEMEA). This role was a great opportunity to learn about the different regions and how VMware operates in diverse cultures. I moved to a more senior role leading Enterprise Sales, and then from there I moved into the role that I currently have as the Director of CEMEA Network & Security. It is very exciting to have the opportunity to do so many different roles in the same company.
The IT Networking & Security market is changing dramatically. A paradigm shift is happening right now and that is being led by VMware. We make ten times more revenue in Networking than our next competitor; this is a constant motivator for me and my teams.
VMware Careers: What is different about VMware in comparison to any other tech company you have worked for?
Gerd Mick: Our focus on culture & diversity, as well as our commitment to innovation sets us apart from other tech companies. There are great opportunities for personal growth and future development as you can see from my background. This company has a great success story and central to that success are the people who work here.
VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?
Gerd Mick: I would say navigating how to manage people in different regions who all have different approaches but who have a common goal of execution and excellence. I’ve been in this business for thirty years, and over time management methods and people’s priorities are changing, I’ve learned that one must adapt their management style to stay ahead of the game, especially in IT Sales.
VMware Careers: You are hiring for several exciting roles across your team in CEMEA. Tell us more!
Gerd Mick: All the roles on my team are about understanding our customers’ priorities and putting their needs center stage. We’re working to over-achieve on the expectations of our customers. Our goal is making them successful and having fun while doing it together. We need passionate people who can take a different approach. People who have the ambition to take responsibility for their customers success and people who like to learn and have fun!
VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to an interview with you tomorrow for this role, what advice would you offer them?
Gerd Mick: I look for optimists with a can-do attitude. People who are willing to create the future and create success for their customers –If the customer is successful then they will be too! I also look for the desire to learn and to be innovative. If you can share examples of your persistence and integrity during an interview that would also impress me.
